BRIEFLY Road work will restrict crosswalks New asphalt is scheduled to be put down on Sumter Street Tuesday and will severely re strict pedestrian crosswalks, project manager Ben Coon'rod said. A binder course of liquid as phalt eipulsion will be put down on the existing pavement first and the regular asphalt put on top of it. The binder is sticky, and will ruin the shoes of anyone who walks across it. Tracks from the binder are almost impossible to remove. Also, any cars parked on Sumter Street between Greene and Blossom streets at any time during the day will be towed, ' Coonrod said. Last week’s rainy weather has delayed completion of the project. Coonrod said that if the rain holds off, the project should be complete by Nov. 20. Now, the contractor is raising the tops of manhole covers anfl dong other work necessary to pre pare the street for repaving. She said Division I schools have to undergo the certification process every 10 years. “The purpose of the process is to open the affairs of athletics to the campus community and to be able to show the benefits of athlet ics and how it can be incorporat ed within the institution’s struc ture,” she said. A peer-review team consisting of five members from various in stitutions came to USC to judge the accuracy of the university’s self-study by conducting inter views with people in the Athletics Department, including student athletes. “We’re bringing in athletes from all sports, minorities and women, and they’re going to be ^ questioned by the entire team,” Moody said. “They’re looking to see that the athletes are treated fairly and equitably and if there are any problems and concerns or so forth.” Peal said that once the peer-re view team leaves USC, it will write its own report, which will be sent to the Athletics Department for a response. All of that information will then be sent to the Committee on Athletic Certification at the NCAA, which will give the insti tution up to a year to respond to any problems the committee iden tifies. ii a sviiuui Ians 10 respond or does not try to change problems in its program, then the commit tee will decide either that the in stitution is certified with condi tions or that it is not certified. Peal said the certification pro cess “affects students in a positive manner because they’ve (the in stitution) had the opportunity to study themselves and make im provements after this thorough study.” “That impacts your student ath letes and ensures their treatment of equity for women and minori ties,” she said. Demetria Washington, a fifth year exercise science student from Fayetteville, N.C., and member of the track team that won USC’s first-ever national championship, said she thinks she is treated fair ly in the athletics program. “Personally, I don’t see any problems with the athletic teams jg at the University of South Carolina,” she said. “I’ve always been treated fairly, and my team mates have been treated fairly and, dealing with Title IX, it’s a great opportunity for women to be able to participate in sports.” Comments on this story? Unusually heavy or continuous bleeding, however is not a usual effect of DEPO PROVE RA, and if this happens, you should see your health-care provider right away With continued use of DEPO-PROVERA, Weeding usually decreases, and many women stop having periods completely. In clinical studies of DEPO-PROVERA. 55% of the women studied reported no menstrual Weeding (amenorrhea) after I year of use, and 68% of the women studied reported no menstrual bleeding after 2 years of use The reason that your periods stop is because DEPO-PROVERA causes a resting state in your ovaries When your ovaries do not release an egg monthly, the regular monthly growth of the lining of your uterus does not occur and. therefore, the Weeding that comes with your normal menstruation does not take place. When you stop using DEPO-PROVERA your menstrual period will usually, in time, return to its normal cycle. 2.
