Local station holds release party featuring artists from CD BY WILLIAM MILLS THE GAMECOCK WUSC-FM has created its first ever local music compilation, and the station is holding a CD release party for it tomorrow night. Although the compilation has 17 eclectic bands, because of time and size restraints, only four will be featured at the show. The punk band Donbravado will headline, and local musicians Hick’ry Hawkins, the Kerouacs and My Blind Luck will also play. ' ' The difficult task of selecting bands to play at the release party was based mainly on availability. Some of the bands on the release have recently broken up, or are playing shows elsewhere. A free copy of the CD will be given to each of the local bands that appear on the album. Although the show will consist mainly of rock ‘n’ roll acts, the compilation draws from all gen res. Everyone from the perform ers of Nonstop Hip-Hop Live to emo/indie rockers Courage Riley to Confederate Fagg appear on the release. “The goal of this is to promote Columbia’s local scene and to get everyone on one disc,” said Camille Watkins, former public affairs director of WUSC. Watkins was in charge of puttiijg the compilation together. She began by taking sugges tions from DJs about whom to put on the album. They began with around 60 suggestions — bands that were both local and regional. The list was narrowed down to 17 local bands. Donbravado is more like an all star band of Columbia’s rock scene than anything else. The band con sists of John Sease on lead vocals and guitars, Mattison Gamble on guitars and vocals, Dave Matney on bass guitar and Troy Tague on drums and vocals. Anyone who has been around Columbia’s punk scene for any length of time has heard of Sease, the former lead singer of Self. Tague’s main music attachment is to the famed alt country rock band Danielle Howie and the Tantrums.
