never received it. When the
Bursar’s Office notified the vic
tim that the check was already
cashed, she immediately called
the police, who determined that
the check had been stolen and the
money obtained by a forged sig
nature.
Lt. D. Henry Garbade of the
USC Police Department said in
vestigations of the crimes are on
going. “As in any investigation,
we’re interested in the possibility
of similar crimes in different ju
risdictions,” Garbade said.
. “There’s no telling how far this
thing may branch out. ”
Until these criminals are ap
prehended, students can take pre
cautions to avoid becoming a vic
tim. “Never give your PIN num
ber out over the phone; banks will
never ask for it,” Amonson said.
“And make sure you lock your
mailbox.”
Garbade also has some advice

talking to, especially when it
comes to credit cards,” he said.
And when crimes do occur,
Garbade says “it’s so important
to report this stuff when it hap
pens, no matter how simple it
seems.”
Meanwhile, police say they are
confident they will catch the crim
inals.
“Crimes of this nature may
take a long time to solve, but they
generally are solved because
there’s such a long paper trail.”
Garbade said. “Sooner or later,
they’re going to slip up.”
