Quest leaves men’s
soccer program
As Sunday’s showdown with
the Clemson Tigers draws clos
er by the day, the USC men’s soc
cer team will have to find a way
to win without one of its top per
formers.
Ricky Quest, a junior from
Brooklyn, N.Y., has left the
team to return home for per
sonal reasons, according to the
USC Sports Information
Office.
Quest, a two-time
NSCAA/Adidas Junior College
Player of the Year, had not ap
peared in a game since the 3-1 vic
tory against Washington on Sept.
15. He started all six games he
played for the Gamecocks and pro
vided a scoring punch, with three
goals and an assist this season.
“I don’t know why he left the
team, except that it was for per
sonal reasons,” goalkeeper
Michael Bachmeyer said. “It’s
unfortunate because he was play
ing really well and was scoring
goals for us. But the team has to
move on.”
Originally from Jamaica,
Quest was both a two-time NJ
CAA and NSCAA First Team All
American. He helped lead
Herkimer (N.Y.) Community
College to 2000 National
Championship honors.
As of Tuesday night, men’s
soccer head coach Mark Berson
and his assistants were un
available for comment on this
matter.
Lake given SEC cross
country honors
South Carolina sophomore
Jenny Lake, a native of Geneseo,
111., was named the SEC Female
Cross Country Athlete of the
Week.
Lake’s time of 18 minutes 55
seconds, in the 5-kilometer race
at The Citadel Invitational, set
the James Allen County Park
record in Charleston by 15 sec
onds. This was the second course
record Lake has set this season.
Williams named SEC
Player of the Week
Carolina sophomore forward
Ashley Williams earned SEC
Player of the Week honors fol
lowing a 1-0 overtime win vs.
Florida on Sunday, in which
Williams scored the game-win
ning goal. Williams also scored a
goal against Furman on Tuesday.
“I’m very happy for Ashley earn
ing this honor,” USC head coach
Shelley Smith said. “She has
worked very hard the entire sea
son to help our team and she de
serves the recognition. She contin
ues to be committed and dedicated
and it is nice to see the rewards.
Ashley represents the entire team’s
effort and dedication that it takes
to beat a team like Florida.”
Williams is second on the team
in points (10) and goals scored (5),
having played in all 10 matches
for Carolina with one start.

As for Watson, well, he could
get kicked off another team. But
he could always try giving
Marshall a phone call.

Quote of the Week:
‘"The fans here are too stupid.
You have to play perfect every
game. You can’t make an
error. You can’t go 0-for-4. Are
we like (expletive) machines?”
— New York Mets shortstop
Rey Ordonez, who told the
New-York Post he wants to
play for another team.
- *
Maybe Mets fans have a
point. Going 0-for-4 occasionally
is OK, but Ordonez makes a
habit out of it. He hit .254 this
season — and that was his best
in three seasons. They’d proba
bly be glad to see him go.

Aleca Johnson finished 2002
with a 9-2 record in 28 appear
ances, 25 of those in relief, as
well as a team-leading six saves.
Stacey Johnson, despite
struggling with nagging in
juries, had a respectable 14-9
record and 1.78 ERA in her
sophomore season, but
Compton expects her to be just
as sharp as she was in 2001.
“Stacey is back, closer to her
freshman season as far as
health,” she said. “She’s throw
ing the ball pretty well in prac
tice, probably as well, if not bet
ter than any time last year.”
Compton also mentioned that
Quinones, along with outfielder
_Jodi Fittro and infielder Meghan
Cornett, all made significant
progress over the summer.
With such optimism this ear
ly, the Gamecocks are looking
forward to a challenging slate of
games in 2003, including three
tournaments and a tough SEC
schedule.'
But Compton likes what she
has seen and thinks her squad
is ready for the task at hand.
“The chemistry is different,
but that’s still forming,” she said.
“Hike the leadership; I like the
work ethic. I see it being a close
knit group, which I think is im
portant, and you need that to be
competitive.”
