Soccer teams start off strong BY KYLE ALMOND THE (iAMECOCK The USC men’s and women’s soccer teams both started their seasons this past weekend with a couple of victories. The men’s team opened Friday with a 4-1 win over Charleston Southern and followed it up Monday with a 2-1 win over Jacksonville. The women defeated Birmingham-Southern on Friday and Davidson on Sunday — both by a 3-0 score. Men’s soccer Despite starting out 2-0, men’s soccer head coach Mark Berson thinks his 16th-ranked Gamecocks still have a lot of room for im provement. “I think our play was pretty sloppy,” Berson said after the Jacksonville win at The Graveyard. “I think our concen tration was very poor.” * Carolina controlled play for most of the game, outshooting the Dolphins 32-8, but the scoreboard didn’t reflect that. “Vfe created some good opportu nities, but we couldn’t finish them,” Berson said. “We have to be a lot better than we were today in order to achieve the goals that we want to achieve this season as a team.” Senior midfielder David Moore opened the scoring with a penalty kick at 22:33, and when substitute Ryan Deter scored in the 38th minute, it looked as if the game would become a rout. But USC missed on several scoring chances and couldn’t add to its lead. “We did some good things all over the field, but we were incon sistent, and our focus is not as good as it needs to be,” Berson said. Berson did have good things to say about junior defender Robert Rosenberg, who started in place of team captain Tim Glowienka, who was sick. Rosenberg assisted on Deter’s goal. “Robert Rosenberg did a great job in the back today; I thought he was outstanding,” Berson said. Berson also spoke highly of Deter, a freshman forward from Raleigh, N.C., who also had a pair of goals in the season opener Friday. “I think Ryan Deter again showed incredible work rate and intensity up front,” Berson said. Deter was one of eight new comers who played Monday. Berson started five of them. “At times, you see the spark and the flair and the athleticism and some really good things, and at other times, we lose focus and concentration,” Berson said of the newcomers. “This is just the pro cess you go through when you have some young players that are carrying a lot of responsibility.” Women’s soccer Women’s soccer head coach Shelley Smith was happy with the way her team started the season. “It’s great to come away from the first weekend with two victories,” head coach Shelley Smith said. “We have added depth to our team, and I think it shows on the field.” Giving USC a huge boost was the return of forward Morgan McIntyre, who was out all of last season with an ankle injury. The senior from Greenville scored a goal in each game. “You can see how much she adds to the team when she is on the field,” Smith said of McIntyre. “She is what we need up top this season and will he a big help all year. ” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@hotmail.com PHOTO BY ROBERT GRUEN/THE GAMECOCK Jackie Welch, right, a freshman for the USC women’s soccer team, shields a Birmingham-Southern defender off the ball during the teams’ season opener Friday. Jenkins CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 Holtz also noticed the differ ence in Jenkins’ play as the game went on. “I thought Corey did an excel lent job for the first time,” Holtz said. “I thought he made some nice throws after the first quar ter. I think he missed a couple of reads, but he also made a couple of reads. I thought he threw the ball well after the firsSquarter.” Despite being on the high of winning the football game and turning in a quality perfor mancerjenkins knows there is plenty of room for improve ment. He also expects Virginia to see more from the USC of fense this weekend than the Aggies did. “With the package we had in today, it was basic,” Jenkins said. “We didn’t really come out and have the offense wide open like we wanted to.
