Men in Black CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 off with “Men in Black.” The unfortunate part is that they stay there. The idea for this type of sequel has such potential, but it never lives up to itself. The movie is poorly edited, and it is entirely i too short. At 80 minutes, “Men in Black II” doesn’t give itself time to be good. It rushes through everything to get to the funny parts from the trailers, creating a hurried feeling and zero flow. “Men in Black II” is a classic Hollywood sequel: It takes a good idea and destroys it, and yet still manages to rake in some serious money from the unsuspecting public. It’s a shame that they didn’t get it right, but you never know, “Men in Black III” might figure it out. Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockmixeditor@hotmail.com I Wanna work for the Gamecock? (AP) - Toward the end of her senior year at Interlochen Arts Academy, Jewel Kilcher invited voice in structor Nicole Philibosian to hear her sing at a coffee bar. "I sat there with tears streaming down my face," Philibosian said. "Such a straight-from-the-heart per formance, such absolute confidence in an 18-year-old kid.... I really knew this was a star in the making." A decade later, the "kid" is known simply as Jewel, one of the biggest names in pop-folk music. In a triumphant homecoming, she performed Friday at sold-out Kresge Auditorium after talking shop with a small group of awe struck youths at Interlochen's summer arts camp. Jewel, who has sold 23 million al bums since "Pieces of You" debuted in 1995, reminisced briefly about her Interiochen days while chatting with the summer campers. She drew laughs by admitting she'd gotten drunk for the first and only time while a student - It cured me of it" - and that she hated the uniforms. But she prized the school's emphasis on artistic ex cellence, the topflight instruction and the opportunity to experiment. ‘Sex’ creator, author married outside ‘City’ NEW YORK (AP) - Candace Bushnell is no longer a single girl in the city. The author of "Sex and the City" has gotten hitched. Bushnell, whose best-selling book was adapted into the HBO television program starring Sarah Jessica Parker, married Charles Askegard July 4 on a wind-swept Nantucket beach in Massachusetts. "One has to be open-minded when the right man comes along," Bushnell told The New York Times on Sunday. "And I know it's freaky, but this just seems like the natu ral thing to do." we re oom inuepenaeni, so we complement each other in a good way," said the groom, a 33-year-old ballet dancer she met eight weeks earlier. "It's fun to be out on the town with her, but when we're alone, that's when it's really great." After the couple were declared man and wife, Bushnell ran across the sand and leapt at Askegard, who caught her and held her above his head. "Life is constantly evolving," said Darren Star, the creator of the hit HBO show. "Everyone has to have a new chapter." Bushnell's "Sex and the City" was a collection of columns she had written for the New York Observer newspaper. She also is the author of "Four Blondes." Bowie says he won’t live in Britain again LONDON (AP) - Veteran rocker David Bowie said he would never live in Britain again because the news media are so obsessed with celebrities. The 55-year-old singer, who has lived in the United States for a decade, said he and his family would have no private life if he came back to his native country "The pure inconvenience of hav ing a camera lens stuck in either my face or my wife and child's face ev ery morning, I think would certain ly be a deterrent to me wanting to come back to live here on a perma nent basis," he told the British Broadcasting Corp. on Friday. "Even being here a couple of days, I mean, this is a really differ ent place," he said. "It's astounding how media-driven London is." Ever since “Californication,” Kedis has adopted a wider vocal range, Frusciante joins with Kedis to create Beach Boys-esque harmonies, and it seems Flea has almost totally abandoned his old slap-happy style. These alt-rock veterans are rock and roll survivors. They have thrived during some of the most difficult and self-destructive times in rock history. The Chili Peppers have tweaked their sound just enough to ride the rock wave as it dodged numerous obstacles, all the while watching fellow musicians wipe out under the pressure. And now, a nervous breakdown, children, and a divorce or two later, the band is releasing a decidedly more mature album than what we are used to from these sock men.
