Phillip Baker Hall, Alan Bates, and Bruce McGill are all excellent as President Fowler’s advisors, conveying a real intensity as they debate on whether or not to start a nuclear war. Perhaps most impressive, though, is Liev Schreiber as special operations officer John Clark. In just few minutes of screen time, he manages to make his character more interesting than any other in the film. “The Sum of All Fears” has its drawbacks, though. There are times when the movie doesn’t try very hard to be realistic; Ryan manages to be in all the right places at all the right times. Ryan’s girlfriend, while well played by Bridget Moynahan, seems to serve no real purpose other than to give the audience a few warm fuzzies. Despite the flaws, “The Sum of All Fears” manages to be a smart thriller while still being an escapist "blow-stuff-up” movie. Perhaps the best part is that the film tells a story about a terrorist attack on the US without any unnecessary flag-waving or overly sentimental patriotism.
