Harmony CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 ’70s folk/songwriting artists, such as “Under the Boardwalk,” “In The Still of The Night” and “It’s Alright.” The group has some sur prises in its repertoire that it did not sing Tuesday night, including “The Real Slim Shady,” “Faith,” and “Virtual Insanity.” In the stripped-down spirit of the Beatles’ “Yesterday,” four of the singers left the appropriately dimly lit stage, and the remaining members of Higher Harmony sung their somber rendition of the song. Higher Harmony also has an unorthodox sense of humor. Before, after and during each song, member’s mannerisms and comments added to the uplifting atmosphere. Young contributes to the group’s comedic aspect with a voice reminiscent of South Park’s Chef, played by Isaac Hayes. All Young had to do was start talking and the audience laughed. First-year student Randall Rate said that the comedy “added to the personality of the band, rather than just being a bunch of guys on stage singing.” Higher Harmony closed the show with USC’s alma mater and “Brown Eyed Girl.” The group mentioned its CD dur ing the show. Many students, in cluding Sharon Smythe, a third year business student, said they would purchase the CD, which was recorded in the recital hall at the School of Music. Higher Harmony’s next perfor mance will be at graduation May 11. The group’s concert schedule, along with pictures of and infor mation about the members, can be found on the Higher Harmony Web site, http://web.sa. sc.edu/higherharmony. Two Puccini works end opera season BY ERIC SUTTON THE GAMECOCK “Two by Puccini” is the last show of this season’s Opera at USC and features two of the com poser’s most popular works. “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi” will be performed at the Roger Center for the Arts tonight and Sunday. “Suor Angelica” is a senti mental tragedy centering on life in an 18th-century convent. The title character is forced to retire to a convent to atone for a for bidden relationship. Even so, she continues to her family’s anger. Conversely, “Gianni Schicchi” is a comic opera based on the 30th canto of Dante’s “Inferno.” It is set in Florence, Italy in the 14th century, where Buoso Donati’s relatives are gathered around his deathbed and anticipating a large inheri tance. After Donati dies and his will is read, the family is aghast when they find that his inheri tance is left to a monastery. Enter Gianni Schicchi, hired by the family to ensure they get the inheritance. Christie Inman and J.L. McDaniel, sopranos, will alter nate nights in the role of Suor Angelica. Inman is a candidate for a master’s degree in voice. McDaniel is a musical arts doc toral candidate and a part-time voice professor at Winthrop College. Jennifer Luiken appears as Suor Angelica’s cold and impos ing aunt, the Principessa, and as the cantankerous Zita in “Gianni Schicchi.” A doctoral candidate, she sang the roles of Donna Elvira in Gazzaniga’s “Don Giovanni” and the Sorceress in Purcell’s “Dido and ♦OPERA, SEE PAGE 8 Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockmixeditor@hotmail.com Uncertain?
