Lieberman, who attended the Democratic National Convention in Orlando last week, also talked about how South Carolina is be coming a pivotal state for Democratic presidential candi dates because of the potential for an early Democratic primary in 2004. . The proposed primary would be held on Feb. 3, making it the third Democratic primary chrono logically, after Iowa and New Hampshire. He said one of the main reasons South Carolinians should be in volved in an early Democratic pri mary is that the high number of registered black voters in the state would allow for a more “repre sentative experience” by seeing results in a state with a large mi nority voting population. Lieberman also spent about 20 minutes taking questions from students and other guests. People asked about current political is sues, such as airline safety, Mideast conflicts and efforts for peace and the environment. “We’re up and running [with new airline safety regulations], but not as quickly and effectively as we would like,” Lieberman said. He said the use of air marshals has improved security but that Bush has not given Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge enough pow er to oversee security in his newly created Cabinet position. Lieberman said that without a two-state solution, the situation between Israel and Palestine is be coming more problematic. “Each side has to recognize the other’s right to have a homeland,” he said. He added that all of the vio lent acts make it hard to have a positive outlook on the situation, especially terrorists who end then own lives to carry out violence. U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., accompanied Lieberman to the law school to introduce him to the crowd. Clyburn later called Lieberman a “pro-business Democrat who works hard to pro tect the economic environment.” Lieberman is also sponsoring a bill that would allocate $530 million in grants for site preservation at historically black universities like Allen and Benedict College in Columbia. The bill mirrors a simi lar House bill proposed by Clyburn. Former Deputy Chief of Staff and first-year law student Morton Brilliant helped organize Lieberman’s visit to the law school. He said Lieberman takes great interest in the state and is a man of “faith and values.” SCARED?
