Quinones, who went 4-for-6 Saturday with four RBIs, noted the importance of beating Kentucky after the Georgia loss. “That was a cheap loss,” she said. “We just came out here and played like we knew we could play.” Game 3: USC 2, Kentucky 0 Sunday afternoon, the Lady Gamecocks used a two-run fifth inning to sweep Kentucky. A pair of wins in the series improved Matthews’ record to 18-5. Compton brought in Aleca Johnson on Sunday to give her some innings this weekend. “When we can save an inning here and there, it will help us to wards the end of the season,” she said. Aleca Johnson “wasn’t seeing as many innings this weekend, so we just wanted her to get a little action. ’’ With nine strikeouts over the weekend, Matthews needs only three more to break the old USC record of 1,032 set by Trinity Johnson, and she should do so this coming weekend at Florida. Matthews reflected on the possi bility of setting the record at home. “I really would have liked to,” she said. “But I was just trying to go out and do what I could do. “I give Trinity Johnson credit. She (set the record) in three years, but me, I’ll do it in four. I realize that she had one less year than I will, but I like the win column in the end. ” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@hotmail.com Women’s track breaks record USC track and field head coach Curtis Frye was pleased when the Sea Ray Relays were over.
