Some went from stage to stage to hear blues, rock, hip-hop and gospel all in the same day. “I came to see John Mayall; I missed George Clinton last night, (and I) came to see OutKast,” Ott said, describing his Saturday itinerary for 3 Rivers. Blues, country and even some jazz acts performed on the State Farm stage, while the unplugged BMW stage was right across the street at the Big Apple. Rock, hip-hop and reggae acts played the Budweiser stage. Gospel and contemporary Christian acts had the Blue Cross/Blue Shield stage inside the Zion Baptist Church on Washington Street. R&B and soul acts were featured on the BellSouth Stage, and there was even a Pepsi/Publix children’s stage in Memorial Park. Several local bands had the chance to perform early sets on these stages. Soul Mites, Captain Easy and Encaustic all had a chance to open for the major acts each evening. Encaustic vocalist Carmen Keigans compared the 3 Rivers at mosphere to the local club scene. “I think there’s definitely a dif ferent crowd here,” Keigans said. “I think more people are apt to come out to something like this that’s more of a community event. I think the exposure was awesome. It was a nice large crowd.” Later that night, after Encaustic’s performance, Keigans got a chance to dance onstage with Parliament Funkadelic, Clinton’s group. Captain Easy bassist Matt Alsup praised 3 Rivers for allow ing so much local talent to grace the stages. “I think it’s incredible to get this opportunity to play in front of these guys, and to actually be able to stay on the same level is amaz ing,” Alsup said. “That’s what we all want; we want to get to that lev el. This is what they’re allowing us to take that step, so that’s great.” Captain Easy also had a guest appearance from Beatle Bob dur ing its set. The mop-topped music lover and avid concert-goer trav eled all the way from St. Louis, Mo. He walked onstage and danced with abandon, and he said that Captain Easy “kicked my ass.” “You guys should be proud of them,” he told the audience. In fact, Beatle Bob was im pressed with 3 Rivers as a whole. “It was a good diversity of mu sic,” Beatle Bob said. “It helps if you’re into a lot of good genres and if those genres are well represent ed. And I was very impressed with the local talent that I’ve seen, not being from Columbia.” He said that the only real dis appointment was Friday night’s mixed-up schedule. Sevendust was supposed to perform before 2 Skinnee J’s, who was scheduled to close out that evening. However, Sevendust was the headlining act that night, so 2 Skinnee J’s took the stage early and Sevendust closed the festival for the evening. The 3 Rivers Music Festival concluded last night. Sunday’s headlining performers were the Aaron Neville Quintet, featuring Charles Neville; George Jones; and Medeski Martin & Wood.
