He is now a managing partner with the Columbia law firm of Baker, Ravenel & Bender. Bender has represented many newspapers, including The State, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal and the Myrtle Beach Sun News. “This would be a great oppor tunity to pay back the university and the state back,” Bender said. Bender also said he was not pleased with the earlier search, in which the university wasn’t able to get Norton to come to USC. Bender said he thought the journalism school needed more space, more staff and more equip ment. “The school has many dedi cated teachers that have to do more and more with less and less,” he said. Shaver is a professor and ad vertising department chairman at Michigan State University. “It sounds like a very exciting position; the school has a lot more potential than it has real ized so far,” she said. Whaley’s Mill and the Rapids have washer and dryer connections and on-site laundry facilities. Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management student Brett Vowles decided to live in the Commons his second year to “get away from the hassles of living on campus.” “We knew that there were other college students living around here, so we thought it was a good place to live,” said Vowles. Although Vowles said his expe riences at the Commons have been mostly positive, he noted that “there have been negative things.” “I had my car broken into twice, and I haven’t seen any se curity increases or anything like that,” Vowles said. “The layout of it is nice. Some I of the appliances could be redone; our dryer takes four or five cycles to dry towels,” Vowles said. Engineering graduate student Ben Baker has lived in The Rapids since his fourth undergraduate year. “I thought that living on cam pus was good for the first two or three years, and it might still be good for some people after three years, but for my senior year I chose to live off campus,” Baker said.
