Joycelyn Elders to lecture on black women in the medical field BY ASHLEY VAUGHAN THE GAMECOCK Joycelyn Elders, surgeon general under the Clinton administration, will give a lecture on Wednesday in the Russell House Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Carolina Productions' ideas and issues commission planned this event to bring black history month to a close and to commence women's history month. Chris Maner, ideas and issues commissioner, said: "Her topics of minority health care in the 21st century and women's role in health care and the medical world directly pertain to black history month and women’s rights month. There was no better time to have her speak on our campus." Elders was the ljrst black woman surgeon general. During her term, she began many programs to reduce teen pregnancy and smoking. She also initiated the increase of childhood immunizations and spoke out against the "epidemic" of gun violence. Elders caused some controversy in 1993 when she advocated the distribution of condoms, programs for drug addicts to receive clean needles to prevent the spread of the AIDS virus and more -comprehensive health and sex education in schools. When Elders proposed the last, conservatives accused her of "wanting to teach children about sex." In one of her many speeches, she explained her view: "When you consider the problems we're having with sexuality — we have more than a million teenagers who become pregnant every year, AIDS is increasing most rapidly in our adolescents — well, somebody needs to teach them something about sex." Elders never apologized for speaking her mind or having her own opinions; in fact, during a speech at Iowa State University, she encouraged everyone, especially young adults, to "be true leaders • to get out on point and take a position. At times, that's very difficult.... I know." She said, "I hope you will decide to be leaders with a vision, not leaders who run out and take a poll, find out which way the wind is blowing and jump out in front." "She has experienced firsthand the 'politics of the day' and can give the students insight into the importance of having strong leaders within the country's most recognized and important institution," Maner said. The lecture is free for all USC students, faculty and staff, and is $5 for the public. Tickets are required and can be picked up at the RH Information Center. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture.
