Conversation hearts always passed the time during classes in middle and high school, and maybe they can even now; spreading candy heart sentences across one’s desk banishes boredom in an instant. So spread the love and buy someone candy. You can stuff yourselves silly together. Still one of Prince’s best, “Kiss” rolls all the emotions of love and lust together into the simplest display of affection. “IN YOUR EYES” Peter Gabriel If you don’t believe the eyes are windows to the soul, this ’80s standard will make you reconsider. It’s perfect for setting the initial mood. Remember, it worked for John Cusack. “INTO MY ARMS" Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Hailed across Britain as “the atheist’s love song,” this has Nick Cave admitting to his lover, “I don’t believe in an interventionist god, but, looking at you, I wonder if that’s true.” Of course, when asked about his inspiration for the song, he claimed it was actually about heroin. “WONDERFUL TONIGHT” Eric Clapton Any guitar player worth his salt learned how to play this sweet rock ballad as soon as he picked up a guitar. One thing’s for sure: Clapton sure knows how to enrapture the ladies. “ETERNAL FUME” The Bangles The classic comparison between love and fire was reinvented for the ’80s with this song. In a world where romantic female vocals are dominated by the likes of Celine Dion and Faith Hill, Susanna Hoffs and The Bangles remind us what real music should be like. “ONE” U2 While Bono’s lyrics “One love, one life” were probably talking about a universal love, you can’t help but recognize this song as one of the best love essays ever written. “Love is a temple; love is a higher law.” Right on.
