Jucifer album shows ferocity Amber Valentine sings for emo duo. photo special to the gamecock Power evident in release from emo rock band BY WILLIAM MILLS THK GAMECOCK One of the East Coast’s newest rock duos is revolutionizing emotiorial rock. Athens, Ga., na tives Jucifer are reducing their peers to drivel. The ferocity and simplicity of its music, embod ied in its latest release, “The Lambs” EP, indicates the band would give spectacular live per formances. Jucifer, with its er rofin ofn rtrt rnnimmonfc QTlH tVto lead singer’s shrieks, is visually active as well as musically pow erful. Though the group still seems to be searching for its sound, it might have stumbled upon some thing good. The spastic drum beats and distortion blend in an awkward yet appealing way, and the fluctuating vocals of Amber Valentine conjure up images of Courtney Love and L7. Valentine is the vocalist and guitarist, and Edgar Livengood, her boyfriend, plays drums. Jucifer’s 2000 de but album, “Calling All Cars On The Vegas Strip,” is quite differ ent from “The Lambs.” The use of violin, horns and hip-hop style scratch techniques give the first album an eclectic feel. Since then, Jucifer’s style modification has led it down the road of dis tortion and screams. At times, however, melodic vocals spring up, and a piano can be heard in the first track, “Lambs.” Throughout the album, Amber frequently brings her voice to a beautiful whisper to contrast with her hardcore yells. If ever there were a true fe male figure in rock ‘n’ roll, Amber Valentine is it. She takes on the same role as Jack White of the White Stripes, another ris ing rock duo (though he wouldn’t look half as good in a skirt!). Amber has the look, the power. She is hardcore to the max, and she even has the word rock written across her knuck les. Her power-chord serenade is fueled by an intricate multi amp/cabinet setup that allows her guitar work to be almost deafening. This powerful duo needs a good opening act, and no one in town rocks better than locals Rockefeller Horsecollar. It was the opening act for The Strokes a few months ago and set an awe some mood for the entire show. Friday night should be no differ ent. If rocking out were a pre requisite at USC, we would all be required to attend this concert. Comments on this story?
