Greene was the Gamecocks’ biggest problem all night, as he scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds. Carolina controlled the rest of the way, and the Rams wouldn’t get any closer. Providence (5-2) will provide no easy task for the Gamecocks. The Friars are coming off a win over their top rival, Rhode Island. Last season, Providence knocked off the Gamecocks 60-55. Carolina will face John Linehan and Abdul Mills, a backcourt duo that is among the best in the Big East. Mills averages 18 points per game, while Linehan averages 11.4 points. On Saturday evening, the men’s squad downed Davidson, 236-75, as well as UNC Wilm ington, 263-79. The women proved to be just as successful, knocking off Davidson, 244-96; UNC Wilimington, 230-116; and Gardner Webb, 263-79. Freshman diver Dean Em merton received two first-place finishes on the 3-meter board as well as the 1-meter board. Se nior Zsolt Gaspar won the 100 yard freestyle and the 100 but terfly. Sophomore Istvan Bat hazi won the 400 individual medley, junior Lir Derieg won the 200 backstroke and sopho more Tamas Szucs was victori ous in the 500 freestyle. For the women, Anna Nyiry won the 100 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Junior Kristen Butler won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.67. Fresh man Capi Adams notched in victories in the 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke. Brownwyn Dedkind won the 500 freestyle. Tamra Baker also came on top for the Gamecocks by winning the 3-meter diving competition. The Swimming and Diving team will compete next week in the Kentucky Diving Invita tional. Watson gets OK for basketball practice Before the Gamecock foot ball team gets into full bowl preparation, junior tailback Derek Watson has been given approval to start practicing with the men’s basketball team. Watson approached USC head coach Lou Holtz last week about the possibility of playing basketball. Holtz, Watson, and basketball head coach Dave Odom met Saturday, and Wat son was given the go-ahead to practice Sunday afternoon. “Derek came to me about playing basketball, and we talked to coach Odom about it,” said Holtz. “I have a great deal of respect for coach Odom and the way he runs his program. Derek indicated he wanted to be involved in an organized program during the offseason. The basketball coaches will have an opportunity this week to see what role, if any, Derek could play on their team. He will definitely be back practic ing football by December 14.
