He and Rumsfeld appeared at a Tampa hotel not far from U.S. Central Command headquarters. Franks said he was consider ing setting up a headquarters clos er to Afghanistan, possibly in Qatar, a Persian Gulf emirate that is allied with the United States in its effort to hunt down bin Laden. In response to a reporter’s question whether U.S. intelligence had narrowed bin Laden’s likely hiding places, Franks said there are now two main areas of focus. One is Kandahar, southern stronghold of the Taliban gov ernment, which has harbored bin Laden, and the other is an area between the eastern city of Jalalabad and a mountain base called Tora Bora, Franks said. Bush administration officials have been careful to say they don’t know where bin Laden may be hiding. Immediately after Franks pointed to Kandahar and Tora Bora, Rumsfeld interjected, “They are not the only places we are paying attention to.” He did not elaborate. Tora Bora was built with U.S. aid for anti-Soviet rebels during the Soviet Union’s embattled 10 year occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. It lies 35 miles south of Jalalabad, 'atop a 13,000-foot mountain and three hours by foot from the nearest road. Carved 1,150 feet into the moun tain are a series of rooms and tunnels that reportedly can house 1,000 people. As speculation grows about the possibility of taking military action in Iraq or other countries considered supporters of inter national terrorism, Rumsfeld left open the possibility that Somalia could be a target. “Somalia has been a place that has harbored al-Qaida and, to my knowledge, still is,” he said. Becoming a hero Off the court, Bradley’s deafness has elevated him to hero status. “I love J.B.,” DeMario Taylor, 13, said through an interpreter. “He always listens to the coach and plays good and pays attention.” Bradley has set many good ex amples for the students, said in terpreter Tanya Jennette, includ ing his steady use of his hearing aid. The device is provided for him by the university, as is any other athlete’s equipment. Before the group’s first trip to Columbia in 1998, Jennette said the instructors had a difficult time getting the students to wear their hearing aids. Afterward, students were more than happy to oblige because “Jamel told us we needed to wear our hearing aids.” According to Jennette, Bradley commands the students’ respect because “he’s genuine, bona fide and he’s successful in most of his endeavors, if not all.” Bradley just enjoys the opportu nity to give back to the communi ty, especially because he said he didn’t have a hearing-impaired role model while he was growing up. “They can do anything any body can do in this world,” Bradley said. “All they got to do is just put their mind to it.” Sports was what Bradley put his mind to. “When I was younger, I always had people making fun of me be cause I had hearing problems. Sports became something where I could interact and make friends,” Bradley said. I Mentoring Just as sports have led Bradley to USC and to success, Bradley has helped lead deaf students to big ger and better things. “Last year, I had a child (George Glover) who was having a hard time deciding on what he wanted to do and accepting his deafness as a disability,” said Julie Wittschen, who teaches high-school-age deaf students in Beaufort. After talking with Bradley, the student decided to go to Galludet University, where he is now on the dean’s list, Wittschen said. “I give all the credit to Jamel. He really portrayed to George that it didn’t matter — it didn’t matter if you were deaf, it didn’t matter what anybody thinks about you. You go out there and you make a choice for yourself.” I Inspiring confidence Bradley continues to inspire hearing-impaired students in big and little ways. “I think it’s an in spiration by getting out there and showing people that there’s noth ing that can really stop me from do ing what I like to do in life,” he said. The game was the first time 10 year-old Nallely Ayalla had ever seen basketball played. Bradley’s ease in switching from talking to signing impressed 11-year-old Hakeem Pinckney. And 16-year old Jerrell Reed is more confident about going into the workplace af ter graduation because of Bradley. The only disappointment for these children is that this was their l final visit to watch Bradley play at USC. Because Bradley is still un certain about what he will do after he graduates in May, the Beaufort group is still uncertain whether there will be a trip next year. “I don’t know how to beat this,” Dawsey-Brown said at the end of last night.
