Spy Game Pitt’s character not explored enough CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Somehow, he makes his character quite funny along the way, too. Pitt’s performance is problematic. He simply wasn’t given enough to work with in . this role. The film never explores the deeper motivations behind Bishop’s actions, and that certainly would have made, not only the film, but also Pitt’s. portrayal, more interesting and convincing. Tony Scott’s direction is the same as we’ve come to expect from him. He likes for the film’s actual presentation to be as entertaining as its story. Unfortunately, he tends to take this a bit overboard. Like in his last film, Enemy of the State, Scott makes excessive use of circular panning shots — so much so that one might get a bit dizzy. It seems as though Scott can’t get through a film without at least one scene on a rooftop, filmed from a helicopter circling the building. As amateur as this is, it’s nothing compared with the “time” shots Scott uses throughout the film. In those shots, the picture freezes and goes black and white, and the time appears in bold, white numbers. Putting some thought into the film’s editing could have produced a much subtler way of showing the audience how many hours remain. Despite Pitt’s character’s lackof depth and Scott’s overly kinetic direction, Spy Game is wholly entertaining simply because of its gripping story. The film seems to be a combination of Enemy of the State and Redford’s 1992 film, Sneakers. The end, on the other hand, seems to have taken its cue from The Usual Suspects. If you’re searching for deep meaning, Spy Game isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for a seriously intriguing spy story, in which the question isn’t what’s going to happen but how it’s going to happen, it’s definitely worth checking out. 1-7 i For Games Played During The Winter Break Dec. 7th 2001 THRU Jan. 14th 2002 Special distribution of students tickets will be ( Monday, Dec. 3rd and Tuesday, Dec. 4th from 9 am until 4pm. Llama’s foundation goes back to the childhood friend ship of Mason and lead singer, Ben Morton. In 1996, in their home of Nashville, they started experimenting with instruments, but, both 13 years old at the time, they had an alternative sound in mind. “We didn’t really know how to play anything. We would just mess around. Ben was lis tening to Nirvana,” Mason said. “Dave Matthews came out, and our ears started changing. As that happened, the music we were writing started to change, too.” Llama’s music transformed again when Ben Brown joined the band in 1997, and more re cently, when Adam Binder (bass, vocals) and Ian Fitchuk (key board, vocals) joined. This evo lution has led to a distinct but wide-ranging sound. Mason said: “We have a lot of different kinds of sounds. It depends on the night. The album is more pop rock sounding. Live, it’s more in strumental, jam songs and what not. There’s funk in there, and there’s jazzier stuff. We play for a lot of different types and ages of people.” Mason expects Llama’s sound will continue to change and grow; each member is experi menting with different instru ments and, for inspiration, lis tening to new bands and musi cians, including Radiohead, Paul Simon and Soul Live. “We all really like trying to play other instruments. Ian is a really good drummer, and he can play guitar. I like to try to play the keyboard, and all of the guys want to play the drums,” Mason said. “I’m afraid they’re gonna get better than me. Just kidding.” [ BRAND NEW APARTMENT HOMES ) v_y 215 Spencer Place Cayce, SC 29033 STERLING UNIVERSITY (803) 739-0899 fM- 803-739-0883 r . • Washer and Dryer in Every Apartment • Private Bedrooms with Individual lock & key • 24 Hour Emergency Maintenance • 2 & 4 Bedrooms • Furnished Apartments with Individual Leases • Free Shuttle to Campus • 24 Hour Fitness Center w/ Free Weights • Resort Style Pool w/Hot Tub • Free Tanning Bed ] • 24 Hour Multimedia Center • 24 Hour Game Room w/Pool Table K. s • Basketball and Sand Volleyball 1 ■■HI i Bring in this ad and save 1 $50 off your deposit. i i * not valid with other offers | * Free High Speed Ethernet in -7 Every Bedroom ^
