Tuesday, five rock bands pulled out their best songs for a chance to win a Pecknel Music gift certificate and a spot in the next major USC concert. Bands chosen to participate were Lustre, One Way Stop, Bolt, Exit 101 and No Means. Carolina Productions is the stu dent organization that sets up most of the campus concerts. Concert Commissoner Mckenzie Craven said the Battle of the Bands “is a really big opportuni ty for the local bands to show what they’ve got. There is certain crite ria which the band must meet in order to be considered. The two major qualifications for this year were one person must go to USC and the band must not have a record deal.” Eleven bands sent demos to Carolina Productions’ Concert Commission. After many careful listenings, members chose the five bands. For the final round, three judges were pulled from all music scene realms, including Kenley Young from the Columbia band Fling, Dave Britt who books shows at the Elbow Room, and Moose from 93.5 FM. The judges graded the bands on originality, stage presence and overall sound. USC Battle of the Bands began three years ago. Last year, howev er, it was Battle of the Cover Bands and Love Apple won with its Weezer covers. Comments on this story?E-mail gamecockmixeditor@hotmail.com.
