Art Bar, 1211 Park St. Strokes Highly anticipated album a success CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 Even the ballads come and go with amazing velocity. The album’s length doesn’t diminish its overall effect. If anything, it impresses listeners; while most bands take a good hour of your life to affect you, the Strokes are in and out, and you’re changed. With the band members’ ages ranging from 20 to 23, you might expect more immature subject matter, but the lyrics manage to lie somewhere between typical teen angst and a more mature reflection on life. Boiled down to their roots, the songs are all about relationships — how they can be great and how they can go terribly wrong. The words are crisp like the cold of New York winters and anxious like an adolescent’s sex drive. On the title track, Casablanca croons, “Can’t you see I’m trying? I don’t even like it. I just lied to get to your apartment, and nowTm staying.” With their raucous rock power, The Strokes are here to stay. Is This It? is fated to become musical inspiration for underground garage bands, as well as established rock groups, everywhere. The only question is, where will they go next?
