Something in the performance sparked his interest, and he decided to do a one-man show chronicling the boxer. “I researched eight months. I had respect for Ali,” Ewing said. That respect shows when Ewing calls Ali a “giant” during the show that won him an OBIE, the highest award given to an actor in an off-Broadway show. After touring with the piece, he tailored the show to correlate Ali’s life with anyone’s spiritual journey. “The project to connect the show with Ali’s spiritual journey enhances the knowledge. When you get into someone’s life, you apply their experien ces. It makes you take a look at your own life as to what you are, and you can measure yourself.” Ewing calls the Baha’i faith “the greatest discovery of [his] life.” CALENDAR OF EVENTS Wednesday, Sept. 19 VOLUNTEER FAIR Information about campus service organizations and Columbia agencies will be available at the Volunteer Fair, sponsored by the Office of Community Service Programs. Further Seems Forever plans to play Elbow Room Thursday BY WILLIAM MILLS THE GAMECOCK Once again the emotional rock band Further Seems Forever has made plans to play in Columbia. The band is scheduled to play at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the Elbow Room with Element 101 and Jameson. The cover charge will be $7. Further Seems Forever was scheduled to play at the New Brookland Tavern two months ago. But, the wedding date of the band’s guitarist coincided with the date of the Columbia show. The band found a replacement guitarist, but he dropped out even though promotional work for the show had already been done. Brian Turner, a fan of the band, was upset by the no-show two months ago, and at another date five months ago when the band again did not play as scheduled. He is unsure if he will attend the show Thursday. “I would really like to see them, but I don’t think they’ll show up.” Further Seems Forever, previously called Strongarm, has tamed its once hardcore sound to what bassist Chad Neptune called “melodic and driving,” in an interview with Decapolis, an online media source devoted to Christian entertainment. Its singer, Chris Carrabba, left shortly after its full-length debut album, The Moon is Down, was recorded. He began a solo acoustic project, Dashboard Confessional. Replacing him was 19-year-old Jason Gleason, formerly of Affinity. Despite the metamorphosis the band has undergone, it hasn’t forgotten its Christian roots. Although the band is signed to the Christian label Tooth & Nail Records, its music and lyrics — in an effort to appeal to a wider audience — are not overwhelmed with religious content. They are expecting to enter the studio in March to record their second album. For more information on the band and tour dates, check out www.furtherseemsforever.com. Stereolab Band models a modern orchestra CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 orchestra. With this album, Stereolab has established itself as the harbinger of a new era of music, along with the likes of Radiohead and Tortoise. Unfortunately, knowing the vocalists can sing in French totally misleads the listener. In fact, 10 of the album’s 12 songs are sung in English. The cadence and sonic output is so peaceful and sensual that labeling each song as French seems to fit. Never has the English language been manipulated in such a melodic way. Stereolab will play Nov. 14 at the Ritz in North Carolina and Nov. 15 in Atlanta at the Variety Playhouse. Further Seems Forever to visit the Elbow Room Sept. 20.
