Boone speaks at local church BY JUSTIN BAJAN THE (IAMECOCK The 2000 movie Remember the Titans popularized Herman Boone, former coach of the Titans of T.C. Williams High School, a man whose career is as captivating as his words. Boone, a native of Rocky Mount, N.C., spoke at Shandon United Methodist Church last Sunday as part of an Interfaith Community Celebration sponsored by the United Way of the Midlands. His speech, “Uniting for the Common Good,” reflected many of the things he learned as head coach of the first integrated high school football team in Virginia. Not only was he successful amidst the adversity he faced as a new coach, he guided the Titans to a state championship in his first year. Boone spoke with the swagger of a veteran general, commanding the attention of the standing-room-only audience. Though his speech was filled with inspirational axioms and words of advice, he began with humor. “I’m so glad to have all these young people sitting here, because you get to witness that I am better than Denzel Washington,” he said, referring to the actor who portrayed him in the film. Through his speech, Boone expressed how important it is to have a sense of humor. “To have a sense of humor is to have a sense of who you are,” he said, borrowing a quote from USC head football coach Lou Holtz, with whom he has ties. “Lou used to coach in Virginia, in Williamsburg, William & Mary. I was one of the few high school coaches in North Carolina that Lou would allow to come and film his drills.” Boone also displayed his light-hearted side when asked to comment on the differences between reality and Holly wood’s version. One story involved a scene in the movie when his character threw a banana at a coach who called him a “monkey” and refused to let Boone borrow his team’s game films. But Boone didn’t throw a banana. “No, it was an envelope with an authorization to buy a dog. He called us dogs, instead of monkeys, so the school board gave me a letter with a gift certificate to go down there and buy a dog,” Boone said. Boone also said player Gary Bertier was injured a week after the championship game, not before like the movie portrayed. After the movie was made, Boone retired from his position at T.C Williams High and embarked on a nationwide tour, speaking at many functions and schools. Even with his legacy immortalized on the movie screen, Boone maintains he is still the same person. “I’m low maintenance. My wife said I bought two pairs of Dockers pants. I guess I can afford a suit. I got the same house, the same telephone number for 30 years. You can call my house right now and most of the time if I’m there, I’ll answer it,” Boone said. Boone may have retired from coaching, but he hasn’t lost his touch. While at a recent stop in Dayton, Ohio, another coach let Boone call two plays, both of which resulted in touchdowns. “I said, man, I gotta find a team to coach,” Boone said. I walked into the Russell House late yesterday after noon and saw a sign. It was scrawled in magic marker and hastily taped to the wall. It read like a prayer, like the voice of every American. From those who fell with the World Trade Center to those who merely watched it on the news, their needs, hopes and fears were all contained in the simple words: God Bless America in Her Time of Need. Shut down Latin Grammys, Emmys canceled CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 Other cancellations included tapings for The Tonight Show With Jay Lena at the NBC stu dios in Burbank, Late Night With Conan O’Brien in New York and a Tuesday concert by Madonna in downtown Los Angeles. The Leno and O’Brien shows will be dark all week, NBC officials said. Malls across the United States locked their doors in re sponse to the attacks, and ma jor-league baseball postponed its entire Tuesday schedule. Many movie theaters and other public areas also closed and television networks scrubbed regular programs in favor of round-the-clock news.
