University of South Carolina Libraries
IN OUR OPINION/FROM FRIDAY Downsizing a university At the end of this semester, your college might not exist. Or it might suffer cuts in faculty and resources. Or it might be absorbed by another, larger college. But there is something you can do about it. Because of new budget cuts, expected later this, year, USC has formed the Strategic Directions and Initiatives Committee — SDIC for short — to find ways for Our university to function more efficiently. The group, which now convenes twice a week, will . . . meet with the deans of each Students in college and report findings to sma er or boarcj Qf trustees. There recently doubtless be cutbacks, established reorganization and programs should reassessment in every college, be fearful for a kind of "zero-base budgeting" their future, approach to education. Based on the committee's input, the structure of the university could be changed irrevocably, even if the budget shortfall is temporary. The business school, engineering, math/science and liberal arts programs, called both "cathedrals of excellence" and our best shots at entering the AAU, will likely be harmed least. But students in smaller or recently established programs like the music school or the school of the environment should be fearful for their future. We urge students and faculty to tell their deans what needs to change and what they can't do without. And we urge the SDIC to listen to the deans. If efficiency is indeed the goal of the SDIC, work toward only that. The SDIC should make changes based on the quality of work a college puts out, not on how many research dollars it can rake in. . Intracampus mail is free. So is speech. Write the deans of your school and the provost, or better yet, attend the forums. The review committee has asked for student response, and it's time to give it to them. Public forums will be held Sept. 11, Long Street Theatre, Sept. 18, Belk Auditorium in theB.A. building, and Sept. 25 in the Law School Auditorium. Keep reading The Gamecock forfurther information. WEEK IN REVIEW HOLIDAY EDITION Gone but not forgotten Kappa Alpha Theta’s national headquarters confirmed this past Monday that the USC chapter had relinquished its charter after seeing a decline in enrollment. “The chapter has voted to relinquish its charter, and the Grand Council has voted to accept it,” Liz Rinck from the national headquarters told The Gamecock. WHAT’S NEXT Thetas will still be allowed to wear their letters and live in South Tower, but they won't be allowed to do anything as a chapter. No bail for teens charged in shooting The four teens charged with shooting two assistant U.S. attorneys waived their bail hearings Monday morning while police used the same hearing to clarify their version of a late night crime spree near Five Points. According to Fifth Circuit Solicitor Barney Giese, the attorneys were shot after refusing to lie down on the ground as the four teens told them. The teens later committed three robberies in Northeast Richland, police said. WHAT'S NEXT No trial date has been set for the teens, and Giese said it was too soon to decide whether he would seek the death penalty. Gamecocks start off season on the right foot USC football got off to a strong start Saturday, cruising by Boise State 32-13. However, the less than-overwhelming performance against a heavy underdog left some unconvinced that USC could duplicate last year's phenomenal season. WHAT’S NEXT USC plays the University of Georgia at Georgia on Saturday. The Gamecocks are one-point favorites in their SEC opener. USC phone books arrive late — once again The university’s directories arrived late for the second row in a year, The Gamecock reported Thursday. The phone books, which list the numbers for all USC departments, faculty, staff and students were supposed to arrive Aug. 21. However, College Directory Publishing postponed the arrival date twice because of posting problems, according to an e-mail from CDP’s Tracey Spaventa. This is the second year USC has used CDP and the second year the directories have been late. The phone books were late this past year because of difficulties sorting at numbers at East Quad, which was new at the time. WHAT’S NEXT Director of Student Media Ellen Parsons said she hopes to have the directories delivered to on-campus students by Friday. Off-campus students can pick their directories up at the information desk on the second floor of the Russell House. Annoyances Don’t gripe about South Carolina CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 trying to impress the ladies. If he was, his attempt was as low class as playing the percentages game. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I think you should be fully clothed when walking from class to class, unless, like I mentioned earlier, you’re an attractive girl. Then you can take off whatever you want. I’ve also overheard a lot of people in my classes bashing South Carolina as a state. “I can’t wait to graduate and get the hell out of this state,” one of my classmates said while introducing herself in class. All this complaining about South Carolina bothers me, even though I’m originally from Florida. If you don’t like this state, you shouldn’t have chose to go to school here. If you got here and found out you didn’t like it, transfer. Some things about South Carolina make me mad too, but all in all I think it’s a good state. If you don’t like it, go to North Carolina or something. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: GAMECOCKVIEWPOINTS@HOTMAIL.COM VIEWPOINTS. LET EVERYONE KNOW THE SCORE.
