For $6, hear seven bands, with sounds from traditional acoustic rock to funkcore, per form: Hot Lava Monster, burns.out.bright, Against the Grain, Echodrive, Tykes with Guns, Flud and Freeloader. Each group will take the stage an hour after the previous one. Headlining the onslaught of lo cal talent will be Columbia’s own Hot Lava Monster, a band some at USC might recognize; they played last week at the Russell House. After a few member changes and fill-ins, the band is now com posed of three members: Josh Brannon on drums, Patrick Baxley on vocals and bass, and Michael Schaming on guitar. Hot Lava Monster rivals the sound of an arena band, without the ex cess. Baxley could easily be mistak en for Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes or Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin. The band plans to release a full-length album next week. According to Camille Watkins of WUSC, the bands were selected when the “staff wrote down a list of bands that (we) wanted for the show,” so chances are, if you’re an avid listener of 90.5, you’ve heard their music. The Elbow Room was chosen as the venue because “WUSC and the owners and promoters of (the Elbow Room) have a close rela tionship.” Most of the bands scheduled to play have music for sale in local music stores ahd posted on MP3.com. Hot Lava Monster and burns.so.bright both appear on the Breakneck 2 compilation at Salty’s Skate shop. Albums by Echodrive, from Athens, Georgia, can be found at Manifest and Papa Jazz. Tickets for the October 6 Tool show and the October 12 Jane’s Addiction concert at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheater, as well as T-shirts and gift certificates to Body Rites and Rising High, will be given away between each band’s set. Local band Hot Lava Monster will headline at WUSC’s back-to-school bash. Levereaux Looking beyond the cliches of college CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 Not that we shouldn’t have our share of those memories. This is the only time in our lives that we’ll have little enough responsibility to do things like that. But I chal lenge you to think of some of the more interesting things. This is the time when things start to mat ter. This is the time when we are full enough of life to make things happen. There aren’t clauses and ' sub-clauses attached to our exis tence yet. We don’t have kids, we don’t have a mortgage, and we are in the interlude between child hood and real life. We have a no money down, no interest for four years lease on life. Let’s make the most of it. Tailgating Football's oldest tradition thrives CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 can get a ticket to,” said Leath. While block seating is available this year, Leath does not mind who he shares the stands with, “just as long as they are fans, and not from Clemson.” Leath anticipates a successful season, an expectation that is echoed by the many returning fans that • make going to home games a tradition. The lure of home football games is the chance to be a part of a bigger celebration and ca maraderie that is not felt as strongly when watched on TV, a notion that Mauldin attests to. “We all enjoy coming togeth er to cheer for the Gamecocks. It is one of the best parts of be ing at Carolina.” With vendor calls for water, peanuts and popcorn, the expe rience of college football games is legendary. From the minia ture footballs and pom poms, to the portable chairs that no one bothers to sit in because of the excitement and intensity of the games, not to mention capacity crowds, football at USC is noth ing short of an epic event. The beginning of game day is only a few hours away, and many USC students and mem bers of the Columbia communi ty are ready not only for the Gamecocks to take on Boise State at 7 p.m., but for all the things that are synonymous with college football. The cooks at Bojangles will prepare mountains of biscuits, chicken, and iced tea for eager tailgaters. Cocky will strut his stuff for his fans. The cheer leaders will rally the crowd. The marching band will play “Cocky’s 2001,” while the stu dents and fans cheer for Carolina victory.
