This Week in USC History May 2, 1981 — In an editorial, The Gamecock decried the city’s repeated ignoring of students’ requests to close Greene Street permanently. Monday, April 30, 2001 ‘Mummy II’ outshines its predecessor by Brock Vergakis The Gamecock | REVIEW MOVIE: The Mummy Returns STARRING: Brendan Fraser GRADE: ☆☆☆ out of ☆☆☆☆☆ LOS ANGELES — It’s a rare sequel that outperforms the original, but that’s exactly what happens in The Mummy Returns. Director Stephen Sommers brings back many of the original cast members from The Mummy, but does an excellent job in developing the characters. Some new roles are introduced, including the Scorpion King, who is played by professional wrestler The Rock. Though his performance is brief, he shows promise as an actor. His true test as an actor will come later — a prequel starring his character is planned. The Rock will go from having about 20 minutes of screen time to nearly two hours. But his character has promise, and as The Rock said in an interview with The Gamecock, “The Scorpion King and The Rock are both conquerors. The role was tailor-made for me.” Sommers said he lucked out in his decision to cast The Rock as the Scorpion King because he had never heard of him. “Someone told me to check him out. After I had talked to him, he appeared on Saturday Night Live and on the cover of a magazine. I found out I made a good choice,” Sommers said. But die film’s true strength is based on its otter characters. Brendan Fraser does an excellent job as Rick O’Connell, and went the extra mile for this film, breaking limbs during its filming. And while the film is filled with action-packed sequences and amazing special effects, it’s filled with humor, as well. The introducdon of O’Connell’s son, Alex, is'a welcome addition to the film as is the role of Izzy, a desert pilot who has learned not to trust O’Connell when he says he won’t be shot at. And diose who want to see Patricia Velasquez one more time won’t be disappointed. The actress returns and plays two characters, one of which is the reincarnation of her diameter from The Mummy. Sultry as ever, Sommers pushes the limits for Velasquez‘s,outfits, painting part of ter costume on her in one scene. Sommers does an excellent job with The Mummy Returns, making it entertaining and outperforming the original, The spotlight desk can be reached at gamecockspotiight@hotmail.com « .EFT: Rick Brendan Fraser) ind Evelyn D’Connell (Rachel Veisz) brace for rouble. 3IGHT: Imbotep :ommands a juartet of soldier nummies.
