Dreamworks animated him fan for children, adults alike by Brock Vergakis The Gamecock | REVIEW MOVIE: Shrek STARRING: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow GRADE: ☆☆☆☆ out of ☆☆☆☆☆ LOS ANGELES-Mapy movies claim to be appropriate for the entire family, but DreamWorks’ newest creation, Shrek, is truly that rare type of movie. The same company that brought you Prince of Egypt, Antz and Toy Story has produced a film that’s funny for 2-year-olds, 20-year-olds and 40-year-olds. L/ieiUlIVVUlKS lliU> UCCll WUlKUlg uil me llllll iui yctiis, aiiu US hard work and effort have definitely paid off. With the voices of Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and John Lithgow as the main characters, it tickles funny bones of all ages. Lithgow, the voice of a prince trying to eradicate his kingdom of all fairy tale characters while attempting to marry a princess that the ogre Shrek is sent to bring, is thrilled to be part of a movie that’s so appealing to children and adults. “There was no reason to say no (to this movie),” Lithgow said. “One of the amazing achievements of this film is they construct a movie not just for kids and adults, but [for] teens too.” Innuendo that’s easy for teens and adults to decipher is used throughout the film, but isn’t obvious to young children. “Adults like it because they realize that the kids are oblivious to it,” Lithgow said in an interview with The Gamecock. However, much of the film’s humor isn’t age-specific, such as a scene where Lithgow’s character interrogates the Gingerbread Man. The scene is set to the nursery rhyme “The Muffin Man.” But no movie can be successful without a great story to tell, and Shrek hits the mark. “It has a similar theme to The Nutty Professor— that you should love yourself for who you are and lat beauty is on the inside, not on the outside,” Murphy said, “lyou’re beautiful on the inside, it makes the exterior beautifulfhat’s a sweet little message.” Murphy’s character is the one who helps hrek realize his own inner beauty. “Shrek is this irascible ogre who’s conviced himself that he is happy being alone, but Donkey has decide that Shrek saved his life, and he’s the guy to follow,” co-directo Vicky Jenson said . “Shrek has obvious problems with this, ut Donkey can’t be dissuaded, he can’t be insulted ... and he cn’t be shut up. His persistence finally cracks through Shrek’s sMl,” Jenson said. The strength of the story and its humor areompletely supported by the amazing visual effects of the film. Wile Lithgow said he only spent about 12 hours working on the film the animators spent years. “[This film] seems very revolutionary. It jems like it’s raising the bar,” Lithgow said. “I had no idea how ’ell the visuals were going to work until it was animated.” Between the visual effects, strength of cas storyline and humor of the film, it’s likely Shrek will raise the bann all animated films and fairy tales.
