The second half was dominated by Jackson. The senior guard scored 18 of his 23 points in the final 20 minutes. Jackson’s third 3-pointer put Mississippi State up 5348 with 15 minutes left. Carolina responded with a 7-0 run ' and pulled within one point at the five minute mark after Grant stole the ball from Tang Hamilton and made a jumper. That was as close as South Carolina got, however, as the Bulldogs persevered down the stretch to hold onto their lead and win the game. Though the lead changed 10 times in the first half, Carolina was not able to get it once in the second. Mississippi State and USC both made 27 of 49 field goals (55 percent). The figure was a season high for the Gamecocks. The difference in the game was from behind the arc, as the Bulldogs made 13 of20 3-pointers. The Gamecocks shot 8 for-20 from 3-point range. USC head coach Eddie Fogler, while upset with the loss, was pleased with Carolina’s improved shooting. “They shot the ball extremely well here today,” Fogler said. “They made some open ones as well as some contested ones. They answered when they had to answer, because we had a chance to win here.” The Gamecocks were led by senior Antonio Grant, who scored 15 points in the game. Hamilton added 16 points for the Bulldogs. Going into Thursday’s rematch, the two teams come in on opposite ends of the spectrum. Mississippi State, the No. 4 seal in the West, has now won four of their last five games. Carolina, the East’s No. 5 seed, has dropped five of its last six. The SEC Tournament will be held in Nashville, Term., and tip-off for Thursday’s game is 3:15 p.m. EST. The coach is also worried about the team’s sloppy tackling. “We don’t tackle very well, and that’s a concern,” he said. “We’re not fundamentally sound, tackling. That is something we must improve in.” Spring practice will continue this month and conclude March 31, when the team plays its annual spring football game at Williams-Brice Stadium.
