The left-hander was recently named SEC Pitcher of the Week, as he has tallied a 4-0 record in his first four starts with the Gamecocks and a 1.11 ERA through 24 innings. As USC continues on its winning streak, much of the offense has come from right fielder Brennan Dees and ^center fielder Marcus McBeth. Both have seven home runs this season, compared to this past year’s combined total of 19. “We had some guys that I thought could hit some home runs, more than I thought to date. But McBeth and Dees have hit the weight room four times a week to create an edge for themselves on the field,” Tanner said. McBeth carries a .340 batting average into the series and is anticipating a tough challenge. “Every time we play them, there is a lot of intensity,” he said. “It’s one of the biggest games of the season, so we are going to try and make some things happen. Everyone is a little more juiced and pumped this week because it is the Tigers.” The Tigers are coming off a season where they went to the College World Series. They return sophomore shortstop Jeff Baker, who hit .313 last season, and pitcher Jarrod Schmitt, who was 9-0 in his freshman campaign. Third baseman Khalil Greene and center fielder Patrick Boyd add depth to the Tiger lineup. The Gamecocks swept the Tigers last year in two close games. USC defeated the Tigers 6-3 at Clemson and 9-8 in 12 innings at Carolina. Clemson leads the overall series 146-99-2. “It’s just a great rivalry with two pretty good teams going at each other and great situation for the players, coaches and fans,” Tanner said. The game at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and the Sunday matinee at Saige Frye Field will start at 2 p.m. Both games are sold out. His first goal was also against Mexico, in an exhibition game between the two. Wolff has now appeared in five international games, not including the Olympics. He was an integral part of the U.S. Olympic Team in Sydney that finished fourth overall. Wednesday’s game was Mathis’ eighth international appearance. He has scored one goal for the United States, a game-winner in a World Cup qualifier this past November against Barbados. Mathis set a school record for goals in a season at USC when he scored 25 goals in 1995. “I think it speaks highly for the team that Clint Mathis and myself were able to come in and contribute,” Wolff said. “Clint and I have played together in the past, so we kind of have an understanding of each other.” The win against Mexico gets the United States off to a flying start in their efforts to get back to the World Cup, which will be held in South Korea and Japan in 2002. The Americans must finish among the top three in the six-team group, which includes teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The United States will play each team in the group twice, once at home and once away. The team’s next qualifier will be March 28 at Honduras. “[This win] may take a little bit of pressure off of us as far as going into •this next game,” Mathis said. “Each of these games that we have at home, we definitely need to pull off a win, and this is huge.” The sports desk can be reached at gamecocksports@hotmail.com Sports Briefs ■ Bell named SEC Pitcher of the Week USC junior left-handed pitcher Gary Bell was named the SEC’s Pitcher of the Week for his performance against-Geoige Mason this past Saturdays Bell, from Ponce Inlet, Fla., pitched 8 2/3 innings, scattering three hits and no runs in Carolina’s 1-0 win over the Patriots.
