Wk (Bamccock Baseball from page 8 £ what the coach always told us to do, to keep our head in the game,” McBeth said. South Carolina 7, Delaware State 2 (Saturday) The Gamecocks won game two of a three-game series against DSU with a final score of 7-2, increasing their 2001 record to 8-0. In the bottom of the first, the Gamecocks drove in two unearned runs when DSU’s catcher, Roger Richardson, dropped the ball after USC’s Tony Adler struck out. This accounted for two errors when Richardson missed the first baseman. In the third inning, freshman V catcher Landon Powell hit his second home run of the season, making the score 3-0. Jeffcoat also delivered a home run in the fourth. This was Jeffcoat’s first home run of the season. Brennan Dees started the seventh inning by hitting his seventh home run in eight games. “This was something I thought I’d never achieve since I only hit ten home runs out of 66 games last year,” Dees said. “If you tip your hat at the pitcher and let the aluminum lead the way, a home run is sure to come.” In that same inning, USC’s Chris Bono hit a sacrifice fly that made the score 7-1. DSU made one last attempt to come back when they drove in one run to end the game 7-2. South Carolina 10, Delaware State 0 (Fri day) The Gamecocks added another win by shutting out the Delaware State Hornets in the first game of the series. USC ace Kip Bouknight and two relief pitchers dominated the defensive end, allowing only two hits. Bouknight allowed one hit, one walk and managed to strike out six over the course of seven innings. The Gamecocks took the lead in the first inning on a hit batter, two singles and an infield out. During the second inning, the Gamecocks increased the lead by ninning in two more because of three DSU errors and one hit. With one out in the seventh inning, Drew Meyer hit a line drive that hit the batter’s background behind the center field fence. The ruling at first was that Meyer’s hit was aground-rule double, but after re-evaluation, it was decided that it was a three-run homer. Earlier in the week, Meyer had been hospitalized with a diagnosis of intestinal flu. “I made a late appearance in the game. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to be able to play because of my earlier illness,” Meyer said. “I loosened up, I got a good piece of it, and it got over the fence.” Following Meyer’s home run, Dees hit his sixth home run in seven games, making the score 7-0 by the close of the seventh. The Rebels weren’t just persistent on defense, however. Ole Miss had a 24 7 advantage on USC in second-chance points. Mississippi also out-rebounded the Gamecocks 32-21. “That’s a tough team to play,” South Carolina point guard Aaron Lucas said. “Every year, we expect that type of intensity from Mississippi.” The normally sure-handed Lucas was also a victim of Ole Miss’ smothering defense, turning the ball over four times. “It’s a scary thing when you walk out on the court and you see guys that play that hard for 40 minutes,” Lucas said of the Rebels. “We haven’t seen a team that pressures the ball for 40 minutes like that.” The sports desk can be reached at gamecocksports@hotmail.com No. 16 Ole Miss 67 (21-4, 9-3 SEC) FG FT R A TO PF TP Lockhart 4-60-161248 Kirklin 1-1 0-0 1 0 0 3 2 Harper 3-9 1-3 3 5 4 1 9 Flanigan 2-6 OO 3 '2 1 3 6 Wade 0-1 OO 1 0 2 0 0 Harrison 3-7 OO 2 1 4 2 8 Sanders 4-4 4-4 2 1 0 1 13 Holmes 0-3 OO 0 1 0 2 0 Reed 8-162-2 11 2 1 1 18 Hayes 1-1 OO 1 0 1 0 3 Gunn 0-3 OO 1 0 0 1 0 TOTAL 26-57 7-10 32 13 15 18 67 South Carolina 61 (13-10, 5-7) FG FT R A TO PF TP Petravidus 1-2 OO 3 0 1 0 2 Grant 2-6 OO 4 3 3 0 4 Kitchings 7-103-3 5 0 1 2 17 Lucas 5-10 3-5 2 3 4 3 15 Bradley 4-7 1-11 2 1 1 9 Ross 2-3 1-2 3 1 2 3 7 Taylor OO 1-2 0 0 1 1 1 Boynton 1-1 OO 0 1 2 0 2 Howell 01 4-6 1 0 1 4 4 TOTAL 22-4013-19 21 10 17 14 61 Halftime score: South Carolina 39-32 3-point shooting: Ole Miss 6-21 (Harper 2-6, Flanigan 2-4, Harrison 2-6, Sanders 1-1, Holmes 0 2, Reed 0-1.
