People with borderline LDL will be advised to take another test in three months, monitor their progress and see a doctor. Anyone with a high LDL will need to seek medical attention and consult a dietitian. Cancer The next leading cause of death for blacks is cancer. For black males, the two highest occuring forms are lung and prostate cancer. For black women, the highest occuring form is breast cancer. For prostate cancer, males can perform a self-examination, though it seems unusual for men to do this. ' “How many men would check for [prostate cancer]? That’s not something they are likely to do,” Himes said. Women can also perform their own self-exam. Russell said early detection is the key. “People may feel funny about touching themselves, but they can check up on it now, or suffer the consequences later.” The Health and Wellness Center provides pamphlets and information on prostate and breast cancer and on how to perform a self-exam to detect the signs. “You don’t see too many pamphlets for males about prostate cancer,” Russell said. “However, the number is high among black males between the ages of 18 and 35.” HIV/AIDS The third leading cause of death for blacks is HIV/AIDS. In 1997, HIV infection was the sixth leading cause of death among blacks in South Carolina. African-Americans have also experienced a more rapid increase in the rate of reported AIDS cases. Blacks account for 67 percent of Gety Phat Tuesday*Feb. 27th If you are under the age of 21, it is against the law to buy alcoholic beverages. All ABC regulations enforced South Carolina’s 8,524 AIDS cases through 1998. Things to Do There are many things students can do to live a healthy lifestyle. “Don’t cut out any of the foods that you love,” Russell said. “Moderation and variety is the key.” Reading the labels on food products is also important, Himes said. “What you think may be OK may have a load of fat,”Tie said. “Be cr eful of fat-free,” Russell said. “It may say fat-free, but it still has calories.” She also said just because the product might say it’s fat-free, it doesn’t mean you can overindulge. Students should get regular check ups, even if they aren’t sick. it s not mandatory tnat tney get a physical exam every year, but once every two years,” Russell said. Himes said the household plays an important part on diet and getting regular checkups. “You grow up doing what your parents do,” he said. Russell stresses the importance of proper eating behavior. “Put in the time to eat right and exercise. You have to have that balance of eating right and good exercise in order for your body to be healthy.” Finally, Himes said to look at what’s healthy for overall health. “Don’t look towards culture, but look through what’s healthy.” The spotlight desk can be reached at gamecockspotlight@hotmail.com movie' DIRECTORY Carmike Wynnsong 10 5320 Forest Drive Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (PG 13): 1:00, 4:30, 7:00, 9:30 Down to Earth (PG-13): 1:45, 4:15, 7:00, 9:20 Hannibal (R): 1:15, 1:45, 4:00, 4:45, 7:00, 7:45, 9:45, 10:30 Left Behind: The Movie (PG-13): 2:00, 4:30, 7:15, 9:30 Recess: School’s Out (G). 1:00, 3:00, 5:00, 7:00, 9:00 Saving Silverman (PG-13): 1:30, 4:30, 7:30. 9:45 Shadow of the Vampire (R): 1:30, 4:00, 7:15, 9:15 Sweet November (PG-13): 1:45, 4:30, 7:15, 9:45 Thirteen Days (PG-13): 1:00, 4:15, 7:30 Regal Cinema 7 Columbia Richland Mall Cast Away (PG-13): 1:10, 4:10, 7:00, 10:00 \ Chocolat (PG-13): 1:25, 4:20, 7:10, 9:45 Finding Forrester (PG-13): 12:50, 3:50, 6:50, 9:55 Save the Last Dance (PG-13) 1:20, 4:30, 7:20, 10:10 Traffic (R): 1:00, 4:00, 7:05,10:05 Valentine (R): 1:30, 4:25, 7:40,10:15 The Wedding Planner (PG-13): 1:40, 4:40, 7:30, 9:50 Nickelodeon Theatre The Little Thief (NR): 7:00, 9:00 Movies at Polo Road 9700 Two Notch Road Cast Away (PG-13): 12:30, 3:30, 7:00, 9:45 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (PG 13): 1:00, 3:25, 7:05, 9:30 Down to Earth (PG-13): 1:15, 3:15, 5:15, 7:15, 9:15 Hannibal (R): 12:45, 3:30, 7:00, 9:45 Recess: School’s Out (G): 1:10, 3:10, 5:10, 7:10, 9:10 Saving Silverman (PG-13): 1:25, 3:25, 5:25, 7:25, 9:25 Sweet November (PG-13): 1:05, 3:35, 7:10, 9:40 The Wedding Planner (PG-13): 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 Dutch Square 14 Broad River & Bush River Road Cast Away (PG-13): 1:10, 4:30, 8:00 Double Take (PG-13): 1:50, 4:50, 7:30, 9:30 Down to Earth (PG-13): 1:20, 4:30, 7:30, 9:40 Finding Forrester (PG-13): 4:00, 7:10 Hannibal (R): 1:00, 2:30, 4:00, 5:30, 7:00, 8:30, 10:00 Miss Congeniality (PG-13): 1:40, 10:05 Recess: School's Out (G): 1:00, 3:00, 5:00, 7:10, 9:10 Save the Last Dance (PG-13): 1:20, 4:40, 7:20, 9:50 Saving Silverman (PG-13): 1:40, 4:10, 7:40, 9:45 Sweet November (PG-13): 1:30, 4:40, 7:20,9:50 , Traffic (R): 1:00, 4:10, 7:50 Valentine (R): 1:30,4:20, 7:40,10:00 The Wedding Planner (PG-13): 2:00, 4:50, 7:15, 9:30 What Women Want (PG-13): 1:10, 4:00, 7:00, 9:40 Columbiana Grande Stadium Cinemas 1250 Bower Parkway Cast Away (PG-13): 12:55, 3:55, 6:55, 10:05 Chocolat (PG-13): 12:45, 3:35, 6:40, 9:10 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (PG- 4 13): 1:15,4:15, 7:15, 9:55 Down to Earth (PG-13): 1:30, 2:00, 3:30, 4:30, 5:30, 7:30, 8:15, 9:30, 10:15 Hannibal (R): 1:00, 1:45, 4:00, 4:45, 7:00, 7:45, 9:50, 10:30 Left Behind: The Movie (PG-13): 2:30, 5:15 O Brother, Where Art Thou?
