The victory put the Gamecocks at 13-8 overall and pulled them even at 5-5 in SEC play. Vanderbilt’s record is now 15-8 overall and 4-6 in the conference. Senior forward Antonio Grant had his second consecutive double-double as he led the Gamecocks with a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. The performance came only three days after he had 18 points, his previous career high, and 10 rebounds in USC’s come-from behind 77-75 victory over Georgia. Grant scored nine of the last 15 points for the Gamecocks on Saturday. “He’s playing with a passion above anything he’s played at before,” USC point guard Aaron Lucas said of Grant. “He’s playing aggressive, he’s on the boards, he’s knocking down shots. He’s just playing at a level that he needs to be at.” Lucas chipped in 13 points of his own for the game. Carolina had one of its best shooting performances of the season and seemed to shake its recent shooting woes, outshooting the Commodores 59 percent to 50 percent, well above USC’s season average of 40 percent. “Overall, we played with a lot more focus,” Lucas said. “Wfe understood how important this game was. In the second half, we picked up our intensity, knew that we could hit big shots, and when we had the opportunity, we knocked them down.” The first half was a defensive struggle for both teams, and the game was tied at 31 at the half. The junior guard hit a pair of 3-pointers, a layup and a jump shot in less than three minutes. His 3-pointer with 9:23 left in the game gave the Commodores a 45-44 lead. Carolina regained the lead minutes later to lead 55-54, which was answered by a 3-pointer by Vanderbilt’s Brendan Plavich that gave the Commodores the lead for the last time. Grant and guard Jamel Bradley answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Gamecocks on top 60-57 and give them the lead for good. The win was big for the Gamecocks, as they will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama on Wednesday night. “It seems like in the month of February, things begin to click,” Grant said, pointing to the team’s 6-3 finish last season that began with a victory on Feb. 16. “We knew if we were still going to make it to the NCAA Tournament, the selection committee was going to look for road wins like this,” Grant said USC has six regular-season games left, with three each on the road and at home. Carolina will likely need to win four 6f those games to put it on the NCAA bubble, but Saturday’s win certainly helped its NIT chances. It was the Gamecocks’ fifth win in seven tries at Vanderbilt. Geter, Ujhelyi lead women to win over Kentucky ■ Sunday's win ties school record for conference wins in a single season by Casey White The Gamecock The Lady Gamecocks were back on the winning track Sunday as they captured their fifth SEC victory of the season, downing Kentucky 70-62 at Frank McGuire Arena. The win ties a school record for SEC wins in a season. The Lady Gamecocks last won five conference games in the 1992-93 season. Kentucky’s losing streak was extended to three games with the loss, giving the Lady Wildcats an overall record of 5-16 and a conference mark of 1-8. USC improves to 10-14overalland5-6inthe SEC with the win. Carolina head coach Susan Whlvius was pleased with the win, but she felt the game should have gone more smoothly. “I thought we were tight as we could be offensively,” she said. “However, on the basic things offensively, I didn’t think we attacked well, and I don’t think we played well as a team. We got out of the offense quickly, and we turned the ball over when we did that. I was very unhappy with our overall offensive execution. “Certainly, there were some bright spots, though, and you have to feel good about the win.” One of the main factors of the win was that four Lady Gamecock players posted double digits in scoring. Junior Teresa Geter led the team with 18 points, followed by Petra Ujhelyi with 14 and Cristina Ciocan and Nihan Anaz with 10 each. Geter and Ujhelyi each brought down nine rebounds, and Geter blocked four shots. After scoring only two points in her last two games, Ujhelyi was motivated to improve her game for the team. “I just tried to do my best,” the sophomore center said. “I wanted to play so badly today because I have not done well the past two games, and I felt like I let my team down. I always try to help my team in any way I can. Sometimes it’s with my defense, sometimes my offense, but our goal is always to win the game.” “You saw two Petras today,” Walvius remarked. “You saw the Petra we’ve seen too much of lately, which is her soft take to the basket, and then you saw a couple of plays later she took it real strong to the basket. That’s the Petra we know and want to see more of.” The Lady Gamecocks took an early lead in the first half until Kentucky rallied to tie the game at 24. Soon after, Carolina pulled away again and never looked back. USC shot 50 percent from the 3-point line and netted 61 percent of its free throws in the first half to take a score of 36-31 into the locker room. In the second half, Ujhelyi and Geter’s presence in the paint carried the Lady Gamecocks to victory. The Wildcats managed to close the score to 64-60 with under a minute remaining, but the Gamecocks pulled away with consistent foul shooting. “We’re really a very good shooting team, but we did not attack their zone 70 62 well at all,” Walvius said “When you play this poorly and you win, you have to feel good about it, but we are a much better team than what we showed today.” With Sunday’s success, hopes for a winning SEC record are not far away. “We’re not finished winning basketball games in the SEC this year,” Walvius said “I think we’re going to win more, and our goal is to win the rest of them. As we figure it, we have a good shot at fifth in the league if we can win our next three basketball games. I think we can (win those games), but we are going to have to play hard to do that, and we are obviously going to have to play better than we did today.” The Lady Gamecocks will meet its next SEC rival Thursday as they host the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs at 7 p.m. The sports desk can be reached at gamecocksports@hotmail.com Special to The Gamecock Lady Gamecock center Petra Ujhelyi was a dominant force for USC on Sunday, scoring 14 points and pulling down nine rebounds. bbU BASKETBALL Eastern Division SEC All Kentucky 8-2 15-7 Florida 6-4 16-5 Georgia 6-5 13-11 Tennessee 5-5 18-6 USC 5-5 13-8 Vanderbilt 4-16 15-8 Western Division SEC All Ole Miss 7-3 19-4 Alabama 7-4 18-5 Arkansas 5-5 14-8 Auburn 4-6 14-9 Miss.
