IChE 0amccock Women’s Basketball No. 7 Georgia blows out Lady Gamecocks by Charles Tomlinson The Gamecock ^ The Lady Gamecocks never saw the lead Thurs day night as they were handily defeated by the La dy Bulldogs of Georgia 92-55. Georgia led for the entire game and South Carolina trailed by as much as 45 points. With the loss, the Gamecocks fall to 9-14 and 4-6 in SEC play. The No. 7 Bulldogs improve their record to 204 and 8-2. Teresa Geter, the only Gamecock to score in double figures Thursday night, led USC with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Shaun Gortman contributed eight points, and Ines Ajanovic came off the bench to score seven. All of Georgia’s starters scored in double figures. Coco Miller led with 25 points, and Christi Thomas was right behind with 18 points. Coco’s twin sister, Kelly Miller, had 16 points and was 4-6 in 3-point shots. Tawana McDonald and Kiesha Brown scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Georgia ruled the court from the opening tip, blasting ahead to a 10-0 lead, and early fouls by USC didn’t improve its situation. Petra Ujhelyi was called for two fouls during the game’s opening minutes. Gortman finally made a lay-up to end the USC drought and put the Gamecocks on the scoreboard. However, a 3-point basket by Coco Miller and a suc cession of field goals from Brown and Thomas pushed 92 55 the Lady Bulldogs even further into the lead. At the end of the half, the score was 56-27, and chances of a USC comeback looked slim to none. The second half was no more pleasant than the first for the Lady Gamecocks as they fell even fur ther behind the Bulldogs. Tatyana Troina and Gort man both sunk 3-pointers that temporarily boosted the Carolina morale, but the Bulldogs maintained their vast lead to win 92-55. For the game, USC shot 30.4 percent while their opponents shot 42.2 percent. Geoigia also scored 38 points on Carolina turnovers, while Carolina only scored three. The loss comes when USC is only one win shy of tying their school-record of five SEC wins in one season. “I think this will be South Carolina’s best year in the SEC,” USC head coach Susan Walvius said. “We’ve grown a lot as a team this season.” USC will try again for that fifth win at 2 p.m. Sunday when they host Kentucky. Fogler believes his team is ready to step up to the challenge. “It’s easy to tell a team, ‘somebody has got to step up,”’ he said. “But it’s a hard thing to really do. I think this team has done a good job of coming together.” Af ter the season is over, Gamecock fans might see this || game as the turning point in the season. Even though it’s only one victory, it’s a victory that’s told us a lot about the character the players on this team possess. They’re not quitting, and they’re not backing down from anybody. Signature from page 8 USC also got help at the running back slot with the addition of Georgia natives Daccus Turman and Thez Robinson. Turman broke Herschel W&lker’s state rushing record, and Robinson is ranked in the nation al top 15 by Rivals Recruiting Magazine. However, one player the coaching staff wasn’t able to get was a big-play wide receiver. The Game cocks heavily recruited standout wide-out Roscoe Crosby from Union, S.C., but he chose to go to Clem son. “We did not get a game-breaking wide receiver, but I think that’ll make us more consistent,” Holtz said. “We will still be able to do more on offense.” Holtz feels that newly signed linebackers Xavier Byrd and Orus Lambert could really blossom to run and hit hard. He is also high on place-kicker Josh Brown, who is only the third kicker Holtz has ever recruited. “Recruiting never gets easier because we re cruited against bigger-name schools,” Holtz said. “It’s our jobs to develop them fundamentally, their strengths and attitudes, to mold them into a team.” The sports desk can be reached at gamecocksports@hotmail.com www.dailygamecock.com Citadel tourney poses next test for USC baseball BY JAS06I MALICK The Gamecock Coming off an 8-5 win over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, the Gamecocks will try to improve on a 3-0 record this weekend when they travel to Charleston for the Berkeley Electric Cooperative Shootout at The Citadel. USC will go against three respectable teams in Vir ginia Commonwealth, Richmond and Old Dominion. Carolina opens against VCU at 10 a.m. today. “The Citadel has a very good field, and our performance this weekend is going to nearly resemble an NCAA playoff game,” Gamecock head coach Ray Tanner said. “The next three out of four games will be a big test since [our opponents] are all high-caliber teams.” In last year’s tournament, the Gamecocks won all three of their games. According to left fielder Trey Dyson, USC’s performance at The Citadel was a stepping stone to last year’s * successful season. “[We] played great, and we got enough momentum from winning those three games to cany us through the rest of the season,” Dyson said. The Gamecocks started last year’s tournament by defeating Old Dominion 3-1. The star of the game was . USC pitcher Kip Bouknight, who won his 20th career game and pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven. In their next game, USC pounded their rivals from East Carolina, coming out on top 13-1. The next day, the Gamecocks defeated the host Citadel Bulldogs 4-2 in front of nearly 3,000 fans. “We did very well in that series,” said catcher Tim Whittaker. “Our hitting and pitching was where it should ■ LOCATION: Joseph P, * Riley Jr. Park, Charleston, S.C. ■ TEAMS: USC, The Citadel, VCU, Tennessee, Old Dominion, Richmond ■ FRIDAY: 10 a.m. vs. VCU ■ SATURDAY: 1:30 p.m. vs. Old Dominion ■ SUNDAY: 1:30 p.m. vs. Richmond At this time last year, the Gamecocks were ranked 21st in Baseball America’s College Baseball Top 25.
