“Cht ©amtcock Snatch funny, unpredictable by Tug Baker ^ The Gamecock | REVIEW | MOVIE: Snatch STARRING: Brad Pitt GRADE: ☆☆☆ out of ☆☆☆☆ What do Russian and Jewish gangsters, boxing promoters, a gypsy boxer, Cockney gangsters, pigs, a dog and a huge diamond have in common? Truthfully, it’s hard to say. In fact, it’s doubtful that writer/director Guy Ritchie could tell. Maybe that’s the point. Somehow, though, it seems there really isn’t a point to Ritchie’s new movie Snatch. That doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerously ^ hilarious. It’s hard to synopsize the plot, but here goes: Franky Four Fingers (Benecio Del Toro) has stolen “a diamond the size of a fist” and plans on giving it to Jewish gangster Avi (Dennis Farina), but only after a quick trip to London. Sidetracked by gambling opportunities, he is crossed by Russian gangster Boris the Blade (Rade Sherbedgia) who has hired three unlikely criminals (Robbie Gee, Lennie James and Ade) to steal Frankv’s diamond. which is easier said than done because it’s in a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. For the second storyline, if it can be called that, boxing promoter Turkish (Jason Statham) has come under the watch of local kingpin Brick Top (Alan Ford), a dangerous place to be. Along comes Mickey O’Neil (Brad Pitt), an unintelligible boxer who doesn’t know how to follow orders, ft The main draw of Snatch isn’t the plot, though. It’s the complete absurdity of the situations the characters get themselves in. The characters, with Dick Tracy-esque names such as Bullet Tooth Tony, are zany creatures not unlike the Marx Brothers, and when played so well by this top-notch cast, they’re somehow believable. Special to The Gamecock Benicio del Toro as Franky Four Fingers In Guy Ritchie’s Snatch from Screen Gems Snatch is so much in the same vein as Ritchie’s first movie, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels that some have called it a sequel. Like that movie, people either love or hate Snatch. Both of Ritchie’s movies involve a confusing romp around London with darkly funny criminals who are mere pawns of fate searching for some valuable object, two antique guns in Smoking Barrels and a diamond in Snatch. There isn’t much here that is new from Smoking Barrels, and anyone who criticizes the movie for that is in the right; however, Snatch is such a blast that it’s hard to care. It’s best thought of this way: when having your favorite meal from your favorite restaurant, you don’t expect anything new. You just expect that same great taste. Snatch is no different. Expect the unexpected and enjoy the wildly witty dialogue and helter-skelter antics of bumbling criminals. Where else are you going to find out about the advantages of feeding human bodies to pigs?
