Like Clapton, McRoberts1 music is very personal too. “Father” deals with his father’s suicide and how he dealt with the tragedy. “People are connecting with that because person al is what people, I think, share. When you write with your heart and your own voice, people hear the authen ticity in that and connect with it,” he said. He also cites musicians like Joe Cocker and Marvin Gaye, as well as rock artists Tom Petty and Lyle Lovett, as influences even though “[he] grew up on hip hop and punk rock.” He has been touring for 18 months now. “I miss home, San Francisco, the greatest place on Earth,” he said proud ly. “I miss my friends, my Mom, my dog. It is hard to maintain relation ships on the road.” But this doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy touring. According to McMas ter, it can be an opportunity to relax and goof around. “During the encore song, I joined [the headlining band] and played ka zoo. One night I wore a choir robe and played kazoo, the next night I wore a sort of a Roman soldier thing with the helmet. Once, the band put on marching band outfits they found at the high school we were playing at,” he said. “'There is a lot of camaraderie go ing on, with us guys being idiots to gether.” The spotlight desk can be reached at gamec ockspotfight@hOftmail.com. It’s just about sharing my experiences, my faith, writ ing about places I’ve been, seasons and journeys I’ve walked through spritu ally,” she said. “Christian music has come so far now in really giving the mainstream a run for its money, and they’re putting out CDs that sound just as good, peo ple are singing just as great, the pro duction and recording are just as im pressive,” she said. However, she’s aware that Chris tian music is often put aside. “For a long time, Christian music has been guilty of pointing fingers and being judgmental, like ‘oh these people are talking about things that aren’t as important as what we are.’ I think that’s a mistake because that just widens the gap between the two worlds,” she said. Her live performances aren’t as upbeat as her CD. Indeed, her live shows are often stripped down to the basics — her, her piano and minimal light effects. “Less is more is my kind of approach,” she said. On tour, her most striking memo ry was when she performed at an all male prison. “I thought it was going to be scary and uncomfortable, but it was really neat. They were so grate ful and appreciative,” she said. “It was a very eye-opening expe rience to me because I just foiget that there’s a world out there locked up in a building who needs music, and love, and God too.” The spotlight desk can be reached at gamecocks potlightShatmaiLcom. Tiger from page 5 ward to the challenge and the fun of building “the best [tiger] ever.” For the past week, they’ve been teaming up with student organizations like the Newman Club and Freshman Council to build the 15-foot feline. “Only through cooperation and hard work will this dream of building the perfect tiger be realized,” USC stu dent Justin Gough said of the group ef fort. Though scheduled for completion this Saturday, the head and arms laid incompleted at the feet of the statue, and only the waist down had been clothed in the papier-mache garb. Smith is confident that the struc ture will be ready for its tour of the city this week. The tiger will be appearing at the grand reopening of the Gamecock Bi Lo on Devine Street, and has a tenta tive appearance scheduled at the blood drive on Green Street. The project may still be in its rough stages, but the diligent workers remain confident that the tiger will be com plete and meticulously precise before it’s incinerated into a pile of ashes this Thursday. On Nov. 16, fans should be pre pared to feel the almost uncomfort able warmth of a 20-foot blaze and to watch the yellow and orange flames reflecting off the glassy eyes of thou sands of excited, awe-struck students.
