(Ehc (SamecocR Bands try to encourage youth to go out and vote by Brock Vergakis The Gamecock Some of the area’s most popular local bands spent the night before Elec tion Day partying the night away to encourage young people to participate in this year’s election. Local musicians Shades of Grey, Maywater Rum and Backyard Green played at Momentum in the Vista as part of a “Promote the Vote” party sponsored by 93.5 FM. The idea for the event came from Kenny Floyd, lead singer of Shades of Grey, who celebrated his 25th birth day on Election Day. Floyd was originally planning to have a birthday party, but realized the opportunity was there to do something positive for young people at the same time. Floyd made some phone calls and was able to get some of the state’s most talented bands to help him out. In addition to Maywater Rum and Backyard Green, Floyd brought in Joal Rush, members from Five Way Friday, Sourwood Honey and the Soul Mites. Ryan Goforth of Sourwood Honey emphasized that the bands weren’t at tempting to influence anyone’s opin ion, but were intending to encourage participation in the system. “It’s about getting a better voter turnout,” Goforth said. “We don’t care who you vote for, just go out and check the box. We’re not trying to endorse a candidate, but we are trying to per suade people, especially college-age people 20 to 28 years old to vote and be a part of the process. That’s all we’re asking for.” Voter turnout among young peo ple is traditionally low and was ex pected to be the same this year. Floyd said because students didn’t have classes Tuesday, this was a good opportunity to get them out having a good time and to promote voter aware ness. Those who showed up for the event were treated to an impressive array of young and upcoming talent in addition to local veterans such as Shades of Grey. Maywater Rum, a pop/rock quar tet which was formed less than a year ago in Columbia, is quickly increasing its fan base among students. .Mathematics freshman Gaby Gar cia said she was a fan because,"May water Rum plays music you can make love to.” Scott Berry, lead singer and lyri cist, said the band has been touring the state playing venues such as the House of Blues, the Windjammer, the Esso Club and Sandstone. The band is also playing more parties for fraternities such as Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu. Berry said he thinks young peo ple’s involvement in the political process is improving. “It’s getting bet ter,” Berry said. “Young people are starting to take more awareness.” Although this is the first presiden tial election some of the band mem bers will be legally able to partici pate in, they said they try to keep politics out of their show and just have a good time, except for an occassion al joke at former presidential candi date Ross Perot.
