The actual Peace Frog was chosen because it promoted a positive feeling and heightened awareness about the environment. The first company-owned store opened in the George town area of Washington, D.C. in 1990. The idea caught on; today there are 39 stores that exclusively sell the attire and 36 licensed operations. Fall 2001 styles will be available after Oct. 19. Frye helped design one of the new shirts expected to be re leased by Nov. 1. Frye collaborated with Ken Whitley, the Charleston area Peace Frogs owner, on the design. It will feature the famous frog and the South Carolina flag background. Frye said he would love to design a shirt for USC. “If Holtz can keep this season going, I would love to submit the idea for a University of South Carolina shirt that would be ready by next season,” Frye said. Frye’s store has its fair share of USC fans. Accord ing to advertising junior Elizabeth Neeley, “It was a great idea to open a store here in Columbia. I think the store itself is awesome. Being here in Columbia will make it more accessible.” Math freshman Travis Callahan said, “I personally do not wear the shirts, but I do think they are sort of trendy: I see a lot of people wearing them, so I am sure this store will be a benefit to them.” . . Cayce resident Raven Keener is huge fan of the new store. “I just love all of their stuff,” she said. “I wish I could buy everything. This store is going to do great here.” A portion of proceeds from all Peace Frogs stores goes to the Organization for Tropical Studies, which provides funding for environmental research. Peace Frogs wanted to make a conscience effort for environ mental conservation. The money from Peace Frogs goes strictly to frog and amphibian research. Hours for the Columbia store are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The company can be accessed on the Inter net at www.peacefrogs.com. Hybrid shows off techno jazz by Phil Watson . The Gamecock ft ft ft OUT OF ft ft ft ft One part of the album is immersed in classical mu sic, the other in synthesized techno. So goes Hybrid’s new album “Wide Angle.” Hybrid, a self-professed techno jazz band, uses “Wide Angle” to combine slow, seemingly traditional instru mental pieces with hard-hitting techno beats. The song allows saxophones to turn into fast, irre pressible computer-generated beats. Lead vocalist Julee Cruise has a voice doctored up by the soundboard in most songs, making it sound almost alien. An array of DJs helped produce the album, making the album’s 13 songs perfect to echo through any techno club. The first track on the album is “Opening Credits.” This short yet enjoyable song starts out sounding like an open 1 ' ' ' ' —— -- ing to a symphony. Music Soon after, however, it turns techno with Cruise belting out the surrealistic lyrics to “If I Survive,” the second track. Most of the tracks are fast and energetic, similar to “The Matrix” soundtrack, with adrenaline-pumping beats. This would be the perfect album to play while spending time in an abandoned space station engaging in a zero-gravity laser gun fight with evil robots in the year 3000. “Wide Angle” isn’t for everyone. BuCthose who seek techno and non-stop dance music will be satisfied.
