(The Gamecock Students from page 1 Office of Disability Services records show that 372 students at the Univer sity are physically disabled and need ""I note takers or readers to help them with classes. The office said 262 of these posi tions are filled, but about 110 students still in need of note takers, according to Becky Duke, head graduate assistant The Office of Disability Services is looking for dependable, responsible stu dents with a 2.5 or higher grade point average to take notes or read for handicapped students on campus, Duke said. Freshmen without a current GPA can apply for first semester. When sec ond remester comes, the GPA from the completed first semester will be used. Duke said those seeking to assist , students should come to LeConte 117 W to fill out an application and find out which classes are still open for note tak ers. Students can check the list for their classes and see if there are any open ings for note takers. The student would then sign up to take notes, and after class, go to LeConte and have free use of the copy machine to place the notes in the disabled student’s file. According to Duke, if students want to take notes for a class in which they are not enrolled, then they could sign up for the class and the professor would be notified that the student is working for the Office of Disability Services. “These reading and note taking po sitions and other services we provide are very important for disabled students’ success,” Duke said. “They depend very much upon students without disabili ties to sign up to be readers and note takers.” Because of confidentiality concerns, the Office of Disability Services only allows participating students to have the name of the student for which they pf "■ # are taking notes. For tests, notes should be copied a week prior to the date on the syllabus to ensure ample studying time for the disabled student. Some students could find that by helping students in need, they can better understand the lives of individ uals with whom they may not regu larly interact. “Our services create an awareness for the students working with our of fice and give these students a greater appreciation of the disabled students they are working for and also them selves” said Mimi Meriwhether, a grad-, uate assistant with The Office of Dis ability Services. APO from page 1 stone to one of the parking garages, then APO is more useful in that sit uation, Huggins explained. The new shuttle transports about 125 people a night, and the number' is increasing, Huggins said. When the weather turns colder, Huggins said he expects a jump in the number of riders. “We would like to see the evening shuttle serve around 300 students a night by the end of the semester, and the APO escort about 100 students a night,” he said. Huggins, one of the principal ar chitects of the evening shuttle ser vice, said he wants to work with APO in providing transportation at night for students and faculty. “We will continue to communi cate with [APO] so we can be sure to be oifthe same page,” Huggins said. “They are both great systems, and I don’t want any negative feel ings between the two.” APO takes part in other services projects throughout the year such as Habitat for Humanity, Harvest Hope, the Oliver Gospel Mission and food and clothing drives. But Atkins said the two ser vices must work together and com promise on a couple of things. In the next couple of weeks, the two ser vices will define their roles on cam pus in safety committee meetings, she said. “[Parking Services] could have cgme to us and told us that they were planning to run an evening service.” Atkins said. She summed up the competition between the two evening services. “There is room enough for both of us on campus. We just want stu dents to know that,” Atkins said.
