70 years ago: The Marx Brothers’ “Animal Crackers”
opened in theaters. Groucho sang “Hooray for Captain Spaulding.”
Years later, it was the theme song for his popular TV quiz show,
“You Bet Your Life.”
65 years ago: George Cukor signed with David 0. Selznick for
$4,000 a week, making him the highest-paid contract director in
Hollywood.
And “Top Hat,” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and
“Anna Karenina,” starring Greta Garbo, opened in theaters.
60 years ago: Judy Garland signed a new MGM contract rais
ing her salary to $2,000 a week.
35 years ago: The Beatles met Elvis Presley at his home in
Bel Air, Calif. It was their only meeting. John Lennon, Paul Mc
Cartney and Presley sang an impromptu version of “You’re My
World.”

30 years ago: Genesis ran a help-wanted ad for a drummer “sen
sitive to acoustic music. ” Phil Collins answered — and got the job.
25 years ago: The Great American Music Fair ended violently
in Syracuse, N.Y., when a crowd of 500 stormed the gate. Police
arrested 60 people. The fair featured performances by the Doobie
Brothers and Jefferson Starship.
20 years ago: Founding member Ken Hensley left Uriah Heep,
leaving Mick Box as the only remaining original group member.
15 years ago: Billy Crystal announced he would not return to
NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” He was planning to make a film
with Gregory Hines.
10 years ago: Frank Sinatra criticized Sinead O’Connor for ban
ning the playing of the national anthem at her concert in Holmdel,
N.J.
Five years ago: James Taylor and ex-wife Carly Simon reunit
ed for their first concert in 16 years. The concert was held on
Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened in Cleveland.
And 92-year-old entertainer Bob Hope put on a show in Hawaii
to mark the 50tfi anniversary of the end of World War II. Hope had
been entertaining servicemen since 1941, the year the war began.
One year ago: Talk-show host Jay Leno’s 1932 Dusenbeig road
ster was rated best Dusenbeig at the Concours d’ Elegance, a show
of fine classic automobiles in Pebble Beach, Calif.
And singer Marc Anthony said his new album in English was
“just another way of expressing myself.” He said he wasn’t aban
doning his Spanish-speaking fans.
