WMMBMlWi TOft (Samccock . • • Trammell will sjdp . senior year to turn pro The Associated Press Track star Terrance Trammell is turn ing pro, giving up his final year of eligi bility at South Carolina Trammell, who is competing in the 110-meter hurdles at the Olympics in Sydney, signed with Dallas agent Charley Wells. He is considering endorsement deals with Nike and Adidas. “I felt like I was ready to go to the next level,” Trammell said. “It was time ^ to step up now with it being an Olympic year. This was the best opportunity for me. It was one of those things you don’t pass up. I am excited about all the opportunities.” Trammell was a two-time NCAA Track Athlete of the Year and won five NCAA titles and eight Southeastern Con ference championships in his three-year career at South Carolina. Trammell will return to Columbia in mid-October, after the Sydney Olympics, and continue to train under Carolina head coach.Curtis Rye and work to finish his degree. He will run strictly hurdles races in Europe: Linz, Austria (Tuesday, Aug. 8), Zurich Switzerland (Friday, Aug. 11), Brussels (Friday, Aug. 25) and in Berlin (Friday, Sept. 1). Trammell will then head straight to Brisbane, Australia for the USA train ing camp prior to traveling the Games on Sept. 11. “I prayed about the decision. It was nt an easy one. I felt like I was ready to go to the next level. It was time to step up now with it being an Olympic year,” said Trammell, a native of Decatur, GA. “This was the best opportunity for me. It was one of those things you dont pass up. I am excited about all the op portunities.” Trammell’s agent - Wells - is famil iar with the track world as he also rep resents 2000 US Olympians Marion Jones, Angelo Taylor and John Capel. Trammell lias not closed the door on football yet, but his focus right now is winning a medal in the 110-meter hur dles. “Terrence had an outstanding career at South Carolina. He, like many other outstanding athletes, had to make a tough decision. > “He’s at the top of his game, like a professional basketb®^!a|ef.Iam hap py he has this option,^ said Frye,iwho saw Trammell win five NCAA titles and eight SEC titles in his three year Game cock career. “Wfe are hoping he continues pursuit of his degree. Wfe will certainly be able to help him fulfill all his dreams. It s ^ been quite a ride.” “He has a chance to compete in three Olympics (2004 and 2008) and could contend for gold medals in both the 100 meter and 110-meter hurdles,” Frye said. Quite a ride indeed as Trammell leaves as a 12-time All-American with eight school records, two SEC records and one NCAA Championship record. In the NCAA record books, Tram mell’s time of 13.19 in the 110-meter hurdles is second only to Renaldo Ne hemiah. “I have so many good memories of South Carolina. I did what I came to do - score points for my team and win cham pionships. Lots of fond memories,” Tram mell said. Trammell has 53 hours left to com plete his degree in business.
