It provides a home for young alligators. Fish from page B1 The Coastal Plain The Coastal Plain consists of swamps and marshes, and it’s a transition area be tween the land and the water, characterized by flooding and droughts. There are four parts to this particluar exhibit: the Education Center, the Brownwater Swamp, the Blackwater Swamp and Swamp Snakes. The Education Center is an interactive area that is open to both students and vis itors, alike. It’s a 10-foot open gallery where educators can prepare their classes for the exhibit. The Brownwater Swamp is recreated as a river swamp in flooding conditions. The water is a brownish color and contains pygmy sunfish, shiners and mosquitofish, among others. The Blackwater Swamp shows the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the area at night. This type of exhibit is unique to the South Carolina Aquarium. Mini-dioramas of animals are at the beginning of the exhibit. Visitors are allowed to look into each mini-diorama and show replicas of spiders and other insects. The Swamp Snakes exhibit is a microcosm of a swamp. It features an uprooted - tree with a pool at the base. The roots provide a place for snakes to live. The major ity of light from this exhibit comes from the foreground, and the background remains in shadow.. The Coastal Gallery The Coastal Gallery features the saltwater marshes of South Carolina. The South Carolina coastline totals nearly 3,000 miles. This exhibit ranges from deep-wa ter sounds to tidal marshes and beaches. It consists of many mini exhibits: a rice-culture exhibit, mud-flat relief mode and burrowing animals touch model. There are also exhibits about alligators, seahorses, turtles, schooling fish, fish sounds and coastal erosion. Each of these exhibits are small, but together they present the Saltwater marsh es as a whole and are the hugest part of the Aquarium. The Ocean Gallery The ocean habitats of South Carolina vary from reefs to sandy plains and from surface to deep water. THe main attraction in the Ocean Gallery is dominated by the Great Ocean Tank, which extends over two levels of the Aquarium and holds 322,000 gallons of water. The tank contains many fish, including laige-mouth bass and some sharks, plants and even an occasional scuba diver (who cleans the rocks). The tank can be viewed from three windowsa Sandy Seafloor, a Rocky Reef and the Open Sea.
