The University of South Carolina's mission statement, adopted by the Board of Trustees in April of 1998 states that USC is “committed to becoming one of the finest universities in America.” According to Davis, USC must im prove its undeigraduate and graduate stu dent body profile. This explains a higher standard of ad mission to USC. System wide, USC Columbia had the greatest decline in enrollment as far as actual number of students lost. Since the fall of 1995, the entire USC system has decreased its enrollment by almost 2,000 students. Every campus has experienced de cline in the past five years, with the ex-'' ception of USC Spartanburg, which has gained 200 students since that time. According to Davis, the University will remain committed to recruiting qual ity students. “It is our hope that with attracting the very top students in the country, that a larger number of your high-B/1100 SAT students will chose to matriculate in Co lumbia.” Davis added that the Admissions of fice never would simply admit students to increase enrollment. “We never admit to reach a cer tain number; everyone that reaches ad mission has earned it,” Davis said. USC continues to have success re cruiting minorities to campus. In the fall of 1999, nearly 19 per cent of the student body was African American. Minority enrollment has in creased every year since 1995. | i Student * | i s Airfares ! f 1 11 8 Europe • Africa • Asia • South America § p f More Than 100 Departure Cities! | p P f Eurailpasses • Bus Passes • Study Abroad j= p l!
