Kinloch leaves program Forward transfers to Tennessee Tech by Jeff Romig Sports Editor After the commitments of Rolando Howell, Michael Boynton and Greg Tay lor last Fall, Eddie Fogler had a decision to make. Fogler would enter the 2000-01 sea son with 14 potential scholarship stu dent-athletes, but only 13 scholarships available. Damien Kinloch solved the problem. On May 19, Fogler announced that the sophomore forward had left the Game cock basketball program to transfer to Tennessee Tech where he will play for former USC assistant coach Jeff Lebo, who earned Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors last season. Kinloch see page n USC signees lead Mauldin to state title by Jeff Romig Sports Editor UNION - David Marchbanks and Chris Carter shared positions this season - when one pitched, the other played right field. This equation worked as they led Mauldin to the AAAA state champi onship with a 8-3 victory over Richland Northeast on May 19. Next year, they will share a room in the Roost. All year long, USC baseball coach Ray Tanner has credited his team's suc cess to the depth of his pitching staff. It's about to get deeper. Marchbanks, who went 134 in 2000, is a 6-3 left-hander who throws in the low 90s and Carter, who finished 8-1, is a 6 1 right-hander who is consistently clocked in the mid 80s. One step closer Gamecocks within two victories of World Series by Jeff Romig Sports Editor At the beginning of the collegiate baseball season, every coach will state his team’s goal as making it to Omaha. In January, Ray Tanner followed suit, and set the Gamecocks’goal as nothing less than the College World Series. They’re one step away. The host-Gamecocks blew through their regional last weekend defeating Liberty 6-4 on Friday and Wake Forest 6-1 on Saturday and 8-4 on Sunday. I’ve said many times that we’re not the most talented team in th world, but we play hard.” That work ethic provided results on the field and those results provided recognition. The Gamecocks were the No. 1 team in the nation over the final half of the season and were rewarded first with the chance to host a regional, and now USC will host the University of Louisiana at Lafayette this weekend in the Super Regional, a best-of-three format. If the Gamecocks can defeat the Ragin’ Cajuns, they will be on their way to Omaha. The Gamecocks, however, aren’t looking past Louisiana Lafayette. “I don’t worry about a complacent attitude,” Tanner said. “(The players) know that we’re not that good We’re not that good “We can’t just show up and people are going to be in awe of us and lay down. It just doesn’t happen.” The Gamecocks know they’re in for a tough matchup, but with the Game cock faithful cheering them on, the edge is theirs. use SEE PAGE 10 Sean Ravford Sports Photo toiTOR The No. 1 Gamecocks celebrate after their 6-4 victory over Liberty on Friday night at Sarge Frye Field. 2000 NCAA Baseball Championships I LJL BoTOdoll6_S«PerH,nfIP»aU0»»5wP^MI
