The 'royal we' with Rob and Kevin “Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won’t come again And don’t speak too soon For the wheel’s still in spin And there’s no tellin’ who r That it’s namin’. For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin’.” - Kevin thinks he quotes this song too of ten in hifcolumns. Rob agrees. Neverthe less, we both agree that time continues to prove Bob'Dylan’s words correct. This song spoke true for the ‘60s, and it does today. The other day, Kevin received a letter front Rolling Slone asking him to help choose its next issue’s cover. We’ll be honest , when we say its past few covers have been dreadful. Kevin almost took the opportu nity to click on the link and give the maga zine ltis input. Before he did, he realized that his ideas would differ so vastly from the pop ular opinion that it would easily :ind quick ly get ignored. 1 his bothers hint, because he knows Lou Reed will probably not bring dignity to the same cover that has recently been shared by Carlos Santana (Lazarus in the flesh), N’ Sync and the Backstreet Boys. While Reed’s new album is at near-masterpiece status with us, the vast majority has overlooked this rock leg end and his latest offering to the genre. It would have been nice, though. If you’ve read this column as religiously as we have written it, you’ll quickly realize that we’ve become disengaged and disenchanted with today’s popular cul ture. Frankly, we think it sucks. We're tired of all the cookie-cutter teen romances the movie studios are funding these days. We’re fed up with all the lame pop music that contaminates the radio airwaves. We can’t ride in the car for more than 10 minutes without flipping the stations around, looking for the perfect song, the one that seems to elude all the local stations. It’s an unnerving process, and we’re bored with it. But who is to blame? Is it the people who care nothing about artistic integrity when they assemble the perfect boy band? Is it the record label that thinks omy oi money wnen n signs me gooci-iooxing, teen pop diva rather than a cutting-edge rock group? Or is it the venue that would rather have 12 terrible local bands darken its door be fore bringing in a talented and under-appreci ated national act? These people might very well be the source of our misery, but they aren’t to blame for the state that we are in. We have recently come to the realization that this stuff happens all the time. It has al ways happened, and it will continue to happen as long as music and movies exist. For a short period of time, when we were younger, we were in sync (no pun intended) with the pop ular culture. We knew what the Top 10 songs of the day were. We liked what we heard on the radio. Hell, we even watched MTV for the videos. But that time has come and gone. We have grown up, and our opinion just doesn’t mesh with that of the majority. So are we supposed to stand alone and demand that Guided By Voices get air play on 93.5? No. That’s absurd.
