n The 'royal we' with Rob and Kevin During our spring break a month or so ago, we em barked on a journey that was out of our normal rou tine. While many of you were frolicking (or stumbling) about on some beach or ski slope, we opted to visit something a bit more reserved and tranquil. A few miles up the road from our hometown of Georgetown lies a place with beauty that easily outshines any shop ping center, amusement park or beach strand av enue. Brookgreen Gardens is one of the premier parks in South Carolina, the Southeast or even the world. Seriously, there are few places in the world quite like this one, and we decided there’d be no belter way to relax over break than to visit this hidden treasure of the coast. \Nfe call it hidden because practically no one knows about this place. That, in our opinion, is a trav esty. In this special edition of Encore!, we hope to show just how astounding the collection of sculptures, po etry and botanical oddities Brookgreen has on dis play really is. Several of the most interesting, beauti ful and sometimes puzzling sculptures were selected out of the many monuments to give you a glimpse of what these gardens have to offer. Goddesses, immor tals and many other legends have been captured for ever in the bronze, marble, aluminum and gold works that stand within the garden’s shady, moss-covered canopys. We invite you to put aside a few minutes of your hectic schedules, sit down and enjoy a sample of what we consider to be one of the most awe-inspiring places in the state. And maybe you’ll be taken up by the urge to visit this place of wonder and enchantment the same way we were. But don’t just take our words for it. We’ll let the garden and one of its most famous poems speak for themselves. The following piece was written by Archer Milton Huntington. As husband of artist An na Hyatt Huntington (who has some pieces showcased in these pages), he and his wife provided most of the groundwork and inspiration for these gardens. Perhaps this poem gives a bit of insight into the original spirit of this hidden gem of the Eastern Seaboard. “ The Silver Gardens" Gray oaks of mystery! Beneath their cloister arches in pale rose The morning creeps, Epiphany of day, • Filling the breathing depths with prophecy. In lambent light and lyric prepanttion To raise again the holy hymn of dawn. A thousand choristers, Intone their endless canticles of birth. By flowered founts of woven shadows luring. Haunted of footfalls of the fox and fawn. Here loves chill not the hands that reach to them, As roses of renown sling in the gathering. Come to the silvergardens of the South, Where whisper hath her monarchy, and winds Deftly devise live tapestries of shade, In glades of stillness patterned. And where the red-bird like a sanguine stain. Brings Tragedy to Beauty. We hope you enjoy this peek into the world of Brookgreen Gardens. wusc top 30 1. Cat Power - The Covers Album 2.
