n The 'royal we' with Rob and Kevin Good day, dear readers. This is Kevin from the ‘royal we.’ Rob and I have had several people approach us over the course of the semester and ask about the name of our column. All right, it was only a few peo ple (three or four, I think). We are sure that even though only a handful of you have actually approached us, you all are a little curious about the column’s title. So I would like to take this opportunity to clear a few things up for you. First of all, we got the name from a line in a movie I thoroughly enjoy: “The Big Lebowski.” It basically means that one person is speaking on behalf of sever al others. The term derives from the days of the roy al monarchy. I’d give you an exact date and name, but I honestly have no idea, nor do I care to look it up. Let’s just picture King Arthur. We all know who he is, right? He’s the guy who pulled that blasted sword out of some lake and became the king of England. I suppose this method wasn’t as advanced as democra cy, but hey, we can’t all be perfect. But back to the is sue at hand. Let’s say a subject is brought before King Aurthur. The subject is being tried for attempt ed murder of the king (regicide). Arthur, in his verdict to the subject, might say something like this: “V>fe have heard the charges, and we have decided to have you executed in a week’s time. Until then, we will see you placed in the kingdom’s tower. Furthermore, we will have all the people know that action like this will not stand in our kingdom. Try to kill me, sucka?” Did you see all the “we’s” in that quote? Yes, it was Arthur speaking alone, but he used the word “we” several times. You see, he was speaking on behalf of , the entire kingdom of England. Though it was just his words, as king, his words are the words of all of England. By saying “we,” he means England. Therefore when we say the ‘royal we,’ we mean one person speaking on behalf of many others. So this begs the argument: But there are two of you. Very nice observation; your senses serve you well. Though it is called the ‘royal we’ with Rob and Kevin, and though there is a different picutre of Rob and myself every week, I am usually the one who writes it. That’s-right, you can blame 90 percent of all the crap we write on me. Rob isn’t usually around when I sit down to begin, so I just take the liberty of writing all or as much as I can. Don’t get me wrong, we both agree on a topic, we’ll talk it over, and I’ll just write it later. There are some cases where I will need Rob to finish the column for me. I go blank quite often, and he can usually provide some insight that I overlooked. Though I am the main writer of the column, it is on behalf of the both of us. It isn’t a very complicated process. While it might be equally sad and disturbing how the two of us agree on so many things, I would like to assure you that we have our differences. We could easily aigue and disagree as much as we have agreed in these weekly digests. Our goal is to take a situa tion or event and humanize and personalize it so each of you can take something from it.
