Pages TOt (BamCCOCk . Friday, March 24,2000 I Price, Dees key Gamecock victory by Kyle Almond Staff Writer Let the streak begin - again. After having their 22-game winning streak snapped last Sunday by Florida, the South Carolina baseball team got back on the winning track Wednesday when they dominated Wofford, 17-2, at Sarge Frye Field. sopnomore Brett Price pitched five scoreless innings and struck out a career-high nine Wofford batters for the Game cocks (23-1), who are current ly ranked No. 2 in the nation by Collegiate Base ball and third by Baseball Ameri ca. Add 18 Gamecock hits, eight Wofford errors and a tremendous indvidual effort by junior rightfielder Brennan Dees, and the game translated into a total mismatch. Dees’ RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed him to become on ly the second player in USC history to hit for the cycle. Former Gamecock Derick Urquhart hit for the cycle twice in his ca reer, most recently two years ago against Vanderbilt. The triple capped off a fine game by Carolina’s No. 3 hitter, who finished the game with a game-high six RBIs. “I’m proud of where we are,” USC head coach Ray Tanner said. “We’re play ing pretty consistently, and I think that’s the key. You can’t be good all the time, but if you remain consistent, you’ll win your share of games.” The Gamecocks started scoring in the bottom of the second when Tripp Kelly hit an RBI double to bring home Chris Plummer. Marcus McBeth drove in Kel ly two at-bats later, and Carolina led 2-0. USC then went on to add three runs in the third and fifth innings before blow ing the game out of the Terriers’ reach with a six-run seventh inning that included Dees’ triple, an RBI single from Plummer and two unearned runs. “I’ve never even done that in T-ball,” Dees said regarding the cycle. “But that’s just an individual goal. I’m glad.we got the win and got back on track.” The shutout was broken in the top of the ninth frame, when Wofford’s Strat Stavrou and Aaron Price each hit an RBI double off Rico Bravo, who was seeing his first action on the mound this year. THp fiamprnrkQ nnw fnruc thpir at tendon on this weekend, when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to play a highly antici pated three game series against No. 15 LSU. “Don’t be misled by [LSU] not be ing in the top five,” Tanner warned. “They are still very good, and they can still put some runs on the board.” “But, if we play like we’re capable, I expect things to be positive for us.” LSU coach Skip Bertman, considered one of the deans of college baseball by fans, welcomes USC to Alex Box Stadi um with an 11-2-1 record in the all-time series between the two teams. The Game cocks are on the losing end from prior matches, and last defeated the Tigers in 1997. USC won 8-7 in the second game of the series at LSU. Notes; Projected third starting pitcher Chris Spigner will be out of action for at least two more weeks with an elbow injury.... Fresh man shortstop Drew Meyer did not start Wednesday’s game because of the death of his grandfather, but played centerfield in the top of the ninth inning. Meyer will not play tonight and is questionable for Sat urday and Sunday.... The baseball game be tween South Carolina and the College of Charleston scheduled for Tuesday in Charleston has been moved to Saige Frye Field. ... Senior relief pitcher Lee Gronkiewicz is out for the season with a shoulder injury. PRICE DEES 2000 USC Baseball Statistics (through 24 games) Avg.
