Between 70,000 and 90,000 people showed up for the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Five Points on Saturday. In an environment in which many people stumble to their next destination, glass and plastic litter the streets, and mu sic and laughter fill the air, it was easy to lose yourself in the mood and party with strangers. But the celebration wasn’t just about partying until the bars closed. The festivities started at 10 a.m. and lasted until 6 p.m. Hootie and the Blowfish, Loch Ness Johnny, and Hobex were a few of the many bands providing live en tertainment throughout the day. Hootie and the Blowfish was one band that drew a huge crowd. Eric Kneece, 21, from West Columbia, said, “I was throwing more elbows than the N.Y. Knicks. If you weren’t drunk, you were irritated. Personally, I was n’t irritated.” Tables were set up for for organizations trying to raise money for different causes and for vendors selling decorative jewelry and lestival souvenirs, most oi them green. “[The money collected at the tables] is given to char ities to give kids an improved chance in life,” said Jan ice Cohen, a volunteer for SisterCare. “At Sister Care, we try to break the cycles of violence.” Vendors had a slightly different view of the mone tary situation. “Drunk people always come by here and buy things that are ridiculous and ridiculously priced,” local vendor James Larrison said. “I am going to take advantage of that and make as much money as 1 can.” But overall, partygoers wel corned the good times and took advantage of the at mosphere. “It’s great. It’s fun,” nursing junior Carol Ann Cas tles said. “There are so many people here, and they are all friendly.” There was no guess as to how many USC students entered the ticket gates, nor how many were expect ed. “Everyone is out here having fun,” biology junior Amanda Turbeville said. “It’s great to come out and have fun with your friends.” ‘I was throwing more elbows than the N.Y.
