D The 'royal we' with Rob and Kevin After a week away from school and responsibili ty, you would think we would have something valu able to share with all of you. You’d think the time off would have given us a lot of time for reflection and you’d be right. But if you think we actually used the time to wax philosophical, you’d be mistaken. We wasted the entire week with mindless self indulgence, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. So rather than offer up something of great import, we just have a . gripe. The week in Georgetown was great, but it ended on a very bad note. One of us was in a car “incident” that blew out two tires and ruined a perfectly fine Fri day night. Damn deer. Oddly enough, however, the night would have been OK had we not gone to the local all-night diner to enjoy some poor attempt at redemption for the evening’s loss. All was right with the world at first. The eggs weren’t runny, the biscuits and gravy were traditional enough, and the soda wasn’t flat. The only snag we ran into was when the Pepper Demon knocked a cup of tea into Kevin’s younger brother Will’s lap. He was embarrassed and wet, and we were quite amused But it was all in good fun, right? So we glided to the cash register with our bill in hand and our stomachs full. We weren’t expecting too many problems with the tab because we all ordered the same special, which was quite modest in price. Kevin and his brother were splitting their portion of the ticket, and Rob was taking his cut separately. However, when the lady rang up a price for Kevin and Will that should have been a total for all three, Rob stepped in and protested. We were being overcharged for our food, and it was obvious they weren’t going to hear our complaints. They were wrong. They charged us incorrectly, and we were simply trying to point that out to them. As consumers, we’re supposed to be heard when we have a problem with service, quality or price, right? Well, this staff must have been absent the day they taught “the customer is always right,” because, as far as they were concerned we were lying through our teeth. The problem was this: They had two breakfast spe cials with the same name. They were two different breakfasts, but they shared a name. Where is the brilliance in that? So when we told our waitress we wanted that particular meal, she wrote it down for two of us and wrote the alternate down for one of us. Why she did that, we don’t know. In fact, there are a lot of unanswered questions we had that night. So the waitress was bringing us the wrong stuff, but in her mind, it was the right order. When we asked for the right meal, she thought we were ordering more food. Wrong! We’re sorry, but we were just trying to get what we initially ordered. The late-night manag er was insistent that her waitress was right, and she wouldn’t budge from the total. No matter what we said, we were apparently lying so we could skip out on a $6 difference. She was so right. We had nothing better to do with our night than to go to the late-night diner and hassle the staff. That’s how slow life is in Georgetown. We stood there reasoning with the staff (and we do mean reasoning, because we never raised our voic es or got upset) for at least 10 minutes. If Kevin’s head had not started hurting, we would have stayed there much longer. What upset us most was that the staff would not listen to us. The manager trusted the word of her waitress over the word of three consumers. Even the fuzz had to enter the conversation and try to lay down their law. The deputy who had been eating there suggested we come back the next day and complain to the day manager. That’s just what we did, and he listened to us. We really didn’t care about getting the money back. We just wanted to have someone listen to us. Like you, our faithful readers. We love you all, and we are glad to be back.
