Gamecock Sports _ Women from page 8 As in Sunday’s game at Kentucky, it was a case of not enough time for ^ USC, who dropped to 12-13, 2-10 SEC with the 69-67 loss. “I wanted the ball, I was doing well the whole night,” Lester said af terward. “But, they doubled down on me, I didn’t see that, and Crishna took a good shot.” The last seven minutes of the game was a complete turnaround from the first 33 minutes, which saw Alabama shoot 56 percent for the night and lead by as much as 10 points. The Gamecocks, led by Lester, could only muster 34.9 per cent shooting, but still managed to claw their way back into the game. With 7:12 remaining, the Tide’s Joni ^ Crenshaw laid in a shot to make it 54 ^ 50 Alabama. Lester came right back with two baskets, making the score 57-54. Three minutes later, guard Shannon Segres put back a Lester miss to tie the score at 59. With the crowd standing on its col lective feet, Alabama center LaNisha Cartwell hit a turnaround jumper in the lane to put the Tide up two with 3:50 remaining. Jocelyp Penn answered one posses sion later by making two free throws to tie the score. She also stole the in bound pass, traveled the length of the court and dished the ball to Hill, who shot the ball off the rim and into Lester’s hands. Lester responded as she had most of the night when her team was in trouble by playing the ball off the backboard and into the hole for a 63-61 Gamecock lead. With 2:49 left, Alabama guard Shon dra Johnson calmly drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key, giving the Tide a lead they would never relinquish en route to their 15th win. “We executed the play perfectly, came off two double screens, but weren’t able to get the ball inside,” Walvius said. “Our team really wanted this game.” It was the latest in a string of close losses for the Lady Gamecocks, as they headed into their final home game Sunday against Kentucky. With Lester’s and Shanta Jeffcoat’s final home games looming, Walvius is hoping to motivate the team to win their last two matches and head to the SEC Tournament in Chat tanooga. “It was actually Annie Lester who spoke up to the team after this game and said, ‘We need to beat Kentucky,’” Walvius said. “I couldn’t be any happi er with her performance.” The Lady Gamecocks are scheduled to tipoff at 2 p.m. Sunday for their final home game. There will be a ceremony •honoring Lester and Jeffcoat before the game. Kip Bouknight is healthy and is a fixture in the No. 1 slot, but after that, who will Ray Tanner turn to? Peter Bauer was his No. 2 man, but Bauer went down with a strained abdominal muscle in his start last weekend. So now, Ernie Bascuas steps into die No. 2 slot. Bascuas pitched in relief last weekend and made his case to be in the starting Bascuas rotation. “Those are our two starters for the weekend,” Tanner said. “We’ll make a decision beyond that. Obvi ously, Scott Barber will pitch at some point.” Tanner hopes to get a lot of his pitcher into the games against Delaware State this weekend. “We’ll just see how the games go and make a decision from there,” Tin ner said. USC vs. Delaware State Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, 1:30 p.m. One position that is of no con cent to Tanner is first base. Sopho more Trey Dyson began the year as the starter, but Tripp Kelly slugged ltis way into the lineup. Kelly leads the team in home runs and RBIs after a performance in last weekend’s tournament that won hint an MVP award. “Kelly has just gotten off to a great start,” Tanner said. Kelly’s hot start in no way means Dyson is out of luck. “Dyson is not a guy who will not appear again,” Tanner said. “He had a great year as a freshman. He’s a proven hitter at this level, but be cause Tripp’s gotten out of the blocks so good, Trey’s missed some at bats.” After the numbers Dyson post ed as a freshman, Tanner knows he’ll work his way back into the lineup. “He’ll find a way to get back in there,” Tanner said. “Even if Tripp continues to do well, we can make some other moves and give Trey some at bats.” 2000 USC Baseball Statistics (through five games) G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB Arg. 43 Tripp Kelly, IB 5 17 6 9 3 0 3 11 0 ,529 21 Brandon Pack, C 5 15 6 7 3 0 2 7 0 .467 27 John McHenry, 2B 5 17 3640 0 3 I 353 2 Nate Janowkx, OF 5 12 5 4 0 0 0 1 4 333 1 Chris Plummer, 3B 5 16 5 4 1 0 1 4 1 .250 17 TVey Dyson, IB 2 4 11 0 0 0 1 0 . 250 29 Shane Nelson, OF 5 23 5 3 1 0 1 5 3 217 12 Brennan Dees, OF 5 19 4 4 1 0 1 3 1 .211 8 Marcus McBeth, OF 5 20 2 4 2 1 0 2 0 .200 18 Bry on Jeffcoal, IF 5 5 0 110 0 1 0 .200 7 Drew Meyer, SS 5 17 4 I 0 0 1 1 0 .059 9 Marcos Rios, C I 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 26 Tun Whittaker, C 2 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 000 15 Sieve Thomas, IF 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 IP H R ER ERA SO BB W L Sr 6 Jamie Poston 2.0 3 0 0 0.00 3 0 0 0 0 32 Ernie Bascuas 10 0 0 0 0.00 2 0 0 0 1 38 Peter Baner 9.2 3 2 1 0.93 8 2 1 0 0 23 Lee Gronkiewkz 8.0 4 2 1 1.13 8 1 1 0 1 36 Scott Barber 6.2 4 1 1 135 8 2 1 0 0 46 Matt Wilson 3.0 4 1 1 3.00 2 1 0 0 0 14 Kip Bouknight 14-2 13 5 5 3.07 13 2 2 0 0 Sean Rayford Gamecock Sports Junior guard David Ross tries for two points during Wednesday’s game against Mississippi State.
