The 'roval we' with Rob and Kevin Greetings from this wintry hell we like to call Co latown. While we like the winter, we are tired of this wintry weather, or what The Weather Channel is call ing “Winter Witch 2000.” The snow wasn’t so bad, but when it decided to make itself the guest that warmed its welcome, we be came a little annoyed. Nevertheless, we battled this so-called ice storm on our way to Charleston last week. Wfe were representing WUSC at a Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals show as they kicked off the second part of their tour Thursday night. The road was n’t so bad and the cold was easily dealt with, thanks to the devil in Rob’s heater. The trip, all in all, was fair ly harmless. Thanks for the concern. Now, if we told you our entire experience was fine and dandy, we’d be lying through our teeth. The show was fine. Haiper and company were on the top of their game and the set, while short, was enough to be sat I isfactory. The one problem we had with the venue was the people who sat in our row. By the show’s end, we were convinced that while we didn’t know these people, we weren’t missing out on much: You see, this venue has no general admissions area. There are only rows and rows of seats, which at first didn’t pose an obvious problem. However, we soon noticed how this arrangement wasn’t made with the absolute best of in tentions. Apparently, there were people who were more concerned with boozing up at the show than they were with Harper and company’s performance. While we both preach “live and let live,” we don’t really like it when this policy messes with our concert experience. We would be getting into a particular song when an older woman would walk by, returning minutes later with two tall ones. This wouldn’t have been a prob lem if it hadn’t occurred numerous times throughout the show. We couldn’t fully enjoy any of Harper’s so los because someone would always want to sneak by and purchase another beer or mixed drink. For these people who didn’t give two farts about our concert experience or the experiences of the oth ers they put out, we have a simple and honest ques tion: Did you go to see Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, or did you go to get drunk? It is beyond us how someone would want to get off their rocker before or during a show. Why would alcohol intensi fy your concert experience? How does being drunk help? If there is one thing we have learned with drink ing, it is that if you keep putting them back, your hear ing gets worse. Drunk people are always yelling and screaming at other drunk people as if they couldn’t hear to save themselves. It would seem obvious that this would hold true for a concert, thus making it use less to go in the first place. We might be unique in this respect, but we decide to go to concerts to see the people perform and hear their music. We get a natural high from the entire ex perience. We would rather walk into a show clean and leave clean, while leave moved by what we just saw. We don’t consider this a chore or anything. We consider this a natural action by anyone wishing to see a band or performer they like. It’s insulting when a drunkard thinks more about the next drink than the show and the other people there. Don’t get us wrong, we aren’t straightedge or anything. Believe us when we say we like to have chemical-assisted fun, too. We just have a time and place for such behavior. \W thought the show was quite good, but it was definitely mired by the friendly folks who couldn’t ignore their crav ing for another Bud or Scotch. To get our payback, we decided to cause them some discomfort at the show’s end. We were sitting 10 rows from the aisle, but we decided to go the oth er way, walking past all the people who had inconve nienced us earlier. It might not have made an im pression, but at least they had to think about us, even if it was for a passing moment —• ; —l WUSC-FM spring 2000 schedule Time slot Monday Tuesday Wednesday 12-2 a.m. Textures Industrial Imperial w/Solidst8 Theater 2-4 a.m. Audio XTC 4-6 a.m. 6-8 a.m. 8-10 a.m. Peter A.
